It will be a shame, but the Saddledome would be torn down, without much question in my opinion. That land is valuable to the Stampede board, but not as a hockey rink.

Ya I know.. just thought it'd be neat. Maybe could be a cattle pen in the summer. haha

So now what does Cowboys do? If I were them I would be planning / searching out spots where the new arena is going to be built.
I don't think their current location will be very viable without the Saddledome nearby

We would want that because it's a progressive thing to do for our LGBT community and anyone who is experiencing gender identity issues. It's in this thread because it should be part of the new building and this is a discussion about the new building.
If it makes you uncomfortable to pee with a female potentially in the same washroom as you, I'm sure there will be gender distinct washrooms as well.

He's insulting Canucks fans, in an over-the-top, very offensive manner.

Changing his point, to accommodating all fans in his follow-up post, is disingenuous, and easily seen through.
And I can't stand the Canucks, but there's a line here.

And if they aren't, who really cares? They'll have lots of extra parking open up for them if nothing else.

It survived for nearly its entire existence away from the Dome. It's also coupled with a Casino, and the business isn't contingent on post-game after parties for the Flames.
It will do more than fine where it is.

The Stampede Casino wasn't viable at that location WITH the Saddledome there (it went bankrupt at least once). Bringing the Cowboys nightclub in-house and making it Cowboys Casino made the difference.
That's not to say they don't get a bump for 2-3 hours 40-some times a year (hopefully more going forward), but I'm not certain that the Saddledome is the primary draw of that location - maybe more Stampede Park in general with their events...
That being said, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if a Casino isn't part of the plans for the Flames to go into their new entertainment district... and that's maybe the sort of assistance the AB government could provide...???

This is pretty much the death blow for the often delayed and pushed back plans the Stampede had for 4th street and their Stampede Trail development.

Assumptions on my part, but it was to be a strip of retail and entertainment establishments from 12th avenue south that would tie in incredibly well with the Saddledome and future arena to be as viable as possible. Even back as far as 2008 they couldn't get it off the ground, when rumours of a new arena may have been in their earliest infancy.
Yeah they'll still have the ever growing east Beltline and East Village right there, but I just don't think that will be enough to cut it for them.

With the Flames' planning a new development that will pull a lot of the year round activities and development Stampede was hoping for to the West Village, who the hell wants to go head to head with the Flames on the side of the Stampede board.

My face is a bum!
|
The Stampede was really foolish if they did not do everything they could to get into bed with the Flames. An arena next to the Stampede grounds makes a huge amount of sense. Bars, restaurants, casinos and hotels on or around the Stampede grounds would have benefited immensely. So would have transit for the area. Now it seems like it is fairly doomed to be a semi-wasteland of surface parking for a long time.

Stampede will just have to invest a lot of energy into conventions. Calgary could, or at least at some point is going to need a big convention hall for a major event(s). Expanding BMO Centre could satisfy this.
Naturally, as residential development increase around Victoria Park and the East Village, the urban village district plan will make it feasible for the Stampede to get off the ground.

My guess would be that land would be used for more convention space, maybe a hotel or something with other retail components. Could still be pretty cool.

I don't usually venture down to the Stampede grounds during the summers, but other than the 2-3 weeks in July when the Stampede and rodeos are on, does the land get much use for anything else? Seems like such a waste to have all that land sit idle there for nothing, especially if there's not going to be an arena there anymore.

It's going to suck for people who live in the NW/south that take the c-train. Having to go downtown and switch trains!
