I have a hard time believing that the complex will cost anywhere near only 500 million dollars when the BC Place stadium costed 800 million dollars (and it is just a football stadium).

I tweeted the same thing to Markusoff, he replied:
"hence "easily""
I missed that in the article too. The Oilers new arena is ~$480M, so I think for something of this scale you are looking at most likely a cool Billion and probably more.

$500M will probably be the cost of the Fieldhouse that the city can justify paying for.

Slow news day, because this isn't news. There are no details in this article that we haven't known about for at least 3 or 4 months.

That's what I thought as well. Flashy front page headline, without any information that is newsworthy. Sigh.

We now know that King has met with Nenshi and Nenshi presented the proposal to City Council on Monday. That was the last step before a public announcement, so we know we're closer to a public announcement.
There isn't anything new for anyone who has been following this closely, but not everyone who reads the Herald has been following it closely.

Nothing earth shattering to those of us following this thread very closely. But a lot of friends and family that I have talked to recently about the future facility seem surprised at the prospect of the West Village location, as well as the likely inclusion of a football stadium.
The big news is that they've actually shown council, which is a small step towards something actually happening.
Edit : which is exactly what Getbak said while I was slowly replying on my phone!

The Hockey arena alone would be that. The entire complex would be a lot more.
And BC Place is a complete waste. They could have built a better facility for less than that roof cost.

Have you been to the renovated BC Place? It's an extremely extremely nice stadium.

I love the renovated BC Place, what a fantastic facility. I love the concrete feel of it. The viewing experience from the lower bowl is amazing.

So the Flames fill in Nenshi a couple of weeks ago, and he keeps that under his hat. Nenshi briefs council Monday night and by the end of the week "sources say". Our city council is freaking amateur hour.

Yes, because the latter cannot actually be experienced.

That is fair enough, but the "story" seems to be that the Flames have West Village on the wish list, but they themselves can't comment on it and City Council has said nothing as well.

Its interesting reading Nenshi's tweets about the Flames over the last month. At the time I read them, I didn't know he had already met with Ken King. Nenshi generally hadn't been tweeting about the Flames but now it seems those tweets followed the meeting. It casts those tweets in a different light.

Whatever gets built, I just hope that there are plenty of Gender Neutral Washrooms for Canucks fans to use when the Canucks are in town to play the Flames.
I not only want this new arena to be "State of the Art", but Progressive.
I also hope the Flames brass consider building roads to the arena that include Bike Lanes. Nothing is worse than riding your bicycle to a Flames game in January and trying to contend with rush hour traffic.
