2 things I find remarkable about this:

1. Victim was not hurt and played the game. HOW??? That was a first class tomahawk chop/lumberjack slash that should have put the guy out with broken bones. Incredible.

2. Perpetrator was not assessed a penalty and played the entire game. That's crazy on two levels. First, that no official was watching the warm-up in a league where they've been having warm-up incidents. Second, no one from the other team tried to kill him during the game.

3. That his coach actually allowed him to play in the game. He should have been out of the lineup immediately. Nothing good was to come from putting him in the game.

that he was able to play the game is simply remarkable. No idea what happened immediately after the incident, but you'd think that Helmerssons teammates would have stepped in and/or the coaches or refs would have seen and dealt with it accordingly. Instead he is allowed to play the full game? Wow. No matter who makes the call in the end (refs or his own coach), but a guy simply shouldn't be allowed to play in a situation like this.

Indeed. Aside from the whole thing that such an act is deserving of punishment, even by one's own coach, had he been on my team I would have seriously worried about retaliation attempts going on THE WHOLE GAME. Best if he didn't step foot on the ice at all.

That's nothing, During high school, I played junior hockey and still hold two league records: most time spent in the penalty box; and I was the only guy to ever take off his skate and try to stab somebody.

Off-topic but that's Backlund's old team, isn't it?

Vasteras, yeah. He played there for 4 years before coming over, and he also played there during the lockout.

I dunno why but some media guy connected him to Burke?
Perhaps because he was brought into Leafs when Burke was there.
Was insinuating he was a typical Burke type of player or something.

Charges coming to Deveaux and a second video makes it appear as though he was instructed to attack by one of his coaches:

I'm honestly not. If you look at his reaction it's more of a "that stings" than broken bone.

Rögle released a statement saying that Gath (the assistant coach in the video seen talking to Deveaux) did not instruct Deveaux to attack Helmersson.

People are skeptical about that story though.

Just to be clear, Backlund's team is the one Deveaux played against. Don't want anyone to think that Backlund has represented such scumbags.

A warrant has been issued for former NHLer Andre Deveaux's arrest following an on-ice attack in Sweden, per TT news agency.

Makes sense to me. Prosecutors will argue that his actions fall well outside the "scope of the game" and I think that is a pretty easy case for them. It's pretty similar to McSorely who also faced charges but McSorelys was actually during the game which makes a huge difference

McSorely was found guilty of assault

Devaux got his penalty today. 10,5 months suspension from hockey - in Sweden. The swedish hockey federation can refuse to sign transaction papers within Europe, but he will still be able to play in the AHL, NHL... (not that he is good enough).

So, interesting question. Should these kind of suspensions be world wide?

Me thinks so. If you deliberately try to injure another player, you really dont deserve to play anywhere.

(now, ofcourse, Devauxs intention wasnt to hurt. Here´s his explanlation:

"The game before I got conscious from a hit by Helmersson, but hid it from the doctors."
"Rögle didnt want to report Helmerson because ”Devaux would have to protect himself because the league would not”"
"Before the incident I got mocked by the players, including Helmerson who told him to "Be ready to be carried of (the ice) again”, ”VIK would finish the job” and ”watch his neck”.

Because of this, he decided he had to stand up for himself.... The purpose was not to injure.....

Deveaux Exonerated. Pretty thin on the details though.

Quote:
TORONTO - Former Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Andre Deveaux has been exonerated by Swedish authorities for his attack on an opposing player earlier this year.

Prosecutors had considered charging Deveaux after he delivered a two-handed slash to the ankle of defenceman Per Helmersson during the pre-game warm-up of a Swedish professional hockey league game.

The Swedish Ice Hockey Association suspended Deveaux until Feb. 15, 2016, a decision he is appealing.
