Not at all surprised. Was in the Deerfoot Meadows one two weeks ago and there was a lot of empty shelves. When I asked an employee about it, they said it had been like this since Boxing Week.

You have to think this was inspired in part by Target closing it's Canadian stores. Just another example of American Business Mentality and their "Bold Moves" (tm) leadership. All in one moment, and then fold the next.. (see Devon as well...)

Ha, back in the day, I was one of the many SWC students who went to Future Shop at least a few times a week during lunch. Didn't shoplift, I just loitered around looking at computer games without ever really buying anything.

Wasn't there a rumour of Whole Foods opening in that mall? Maybe they will take over the location.

This is just going to become more commonplace in retail. Bricks and mortar is on the way out, and when Amazon gets the drones going it might get even worse.

Probably not inspired by Target. As noted, the fake competition model was undone by real competition. The company should have consolidated the spots where they had two stores within blocks years ago.

Very sad to hear of the job losses.

And yes, I have no clue how that mall stays open. Maybe Wal-Mart will just take over the whole thing and be a super-duper centre.

Northland Village can't be any deader than Deerfoot Mall.

Youngins. That future shop was an Eaton's in my day. We used to cut through the cosmetic section daily on the way to the food court. Nothing more funny than holding your buddy down and hosing him off with 3 different girly perfumes before afternoon classes.

Have always wondered why Best Buy was open across the hall from Future shop. Now it all makes sense.

I remember when Future Shop on Macleod was the coolest place to visit back in the early 90s. All the salesmen used to wear suits and ties, trying to sell $2500 computers and dot matrix printers. I used to love going there with my dad... The whole place smelled like electronics (not sure if that makes sense to some of you).

This is kind of sad.

My very first full stereo system was bought from Future Shop at Macleod & Glenmore in 1990. It was crappy and very expensive and I had to do it on a monthly payment plan... But yeah, I do remember how cool the store felt at that time.

Not surprised by the consolidation with Best Buy though. There was no differentiation left between them and the parent company, it was just a matter of time.

Hopefully Best Buy ups it's game a bit (though I don't know what their motivation would be). I've usually found their in store customer service to be noticeably poorer than future shop.

Because they don't work on commission.

Half the staff at the one I usually go to don't seem to work unless you ask them to.

I bought from Memory Express.
LOL

That's almost the verbatim experience I had when looking for a computer for my kids in January. i was shocked and we ended up walking out about 2 minutes later and bought from another shop same day. The sale was theirs to be had, but they were too lazy to get it.

The Future Shop near me is literally right next to a Best Buy, and the new Best Buy that opened close to my home in Lethbridge is right across the street from the existing Future Shop. So both of those stores will be gone for sure.

I have no idea why they would do that.

^They did that to fool people who were into comparison shopping.

Honestly, I prefer that. I know what I want and what I am looking for. I'd rather be left alone until I need one of them to unlock a door.

I don't know if we're talking about the same Northland Mall, but they have pretty solid people traffic whenever I'm there. Not Market Mall-level, but more than a lot of malls...

But of all the dual locales BB and FS share, Northland made the least sense to me.

My family and I just bought a new Dryer from the Northland Futureshop and we are expecting a delivery today (Saturday March 28). Hope them closing doesn't screw us over.
