Which is an 80% chance of getting a guy who would likely be the #1 pick in virtually any other year.
It's also better than having a 13.5% chance at McDavid, and 20% chance at Eichel, and a 66.5% chance at neither of them (which is what the 29th place team gets).

well its too bad the Canucks didn't lose to LA and Win
Then the Kings and Jets would be further ahead of the Flames. It was a flip of the coin on who you wanted to see win, the good thing was that both games ended in reg time.
Okay, it was another wild OOT. I am just catching my breath and refilling my oxygen cannisters. In the east, the Rangers are the 1st team to clinch a playoff spot with their 5-1 spanking over the Senators. The Rangers take over 1st place in the conference and the league from the Habs. The Habs lost 5-2 to the Jets as Pavelec was a stud in goal for the Jets facing 41 shots. The Bruins lose in OT and move into a tie with the Senators for the last playoff spot. The Capitals win 3-2 in OT over the Devils and that puts the Caps just a point behind the Penguins for 3rd place in the Met division. The Penguins were awful losing to the Hurricanes 5-2. Carolina was down 1-0 and went on to score 5 straight goals. The Panthers are making things interesting as they beat the Leafs 4-1. The Sharkies got out of their slump and beat the Red Wings 6-4. The Predators have fixed things as they won their 3rd straight beating Tampa 3-2 in reg time. The Kings are showing they are clutch on this road trip beating the Islanders 3-2 in reg time. LOL to the Canucks as they lose 4-1 to the Avs. I hope this is the start of a losing streak to the end of the season for Vancouver.
Pretty poor night for the Flames hopes obviously (Vancouver loss not withstanding), but a pretty great night for my Panther's hopes. Ottawa loses big, Boston loses despite having a lead with a couple minutes to play, and the Panthers win big over the hapless Leafs. There's still a chance I might get to watch some playoff hockey live!!!

Don't get hating on the Buffalo fanbase. The team management clearly wants to lose why do the fans have to cheer for wins? The players should be happy anyone shows up and pays to watch their intentionally terrible team.

I'd respect Sabres fans more if they just stopped showing up.

People keep saying this, but isn't it not automatic that they will even get second overall this year? I thought this year both the first and second pick were lottery drawn, so 30th place in the league could potentially end up drafting 3rd overall, then next year they are changing it to even broader, with the first three picks all lottery drawn? Am I remembering something completely false, because all I hear lately is the 80% likely to not draft first, nothing about what the odds would be of drafting second.
Lets be honest though. If Calgary was in the same position as the Sabres, you as a Flames fan would still be cheering for wins? Why would you not look big picture and hope they finish last overall, so they are guranteed one of McDavid / Eichel, why, by all accounts, are expected to be franchise players? The year Flames drafted Monahan, I was hoping they'd lose more down the stretch. We were lucky Carolina picked Lindholm and left us Monahan, but why rob yourself the chance at a better draft position?

You're remembering something false. Only the first overall pick is up for grabs. They changed the rules starting last year. It's a 3 year gradual change.
1st Year: All teams had a chance to win 1st overall, but % chance is the same as before.
2nd Year: % chance is tweaked to make it more balanced amongst the non playoff teams.
