Prolonged sickness I agree, but for a viral infection that puts you out for 3-4 days, you're clogging up the system and risking infection to others by requiring a note from your employees.

At my old, old job this was the case. It was in retail and it could get really rediculous come the week end when suddenly 3 or 5 employees would call in sick or have some other reason (car won't start) for not comming to work. Basically part time staff all were required to bring in a Dr's exemption note "If your sick you should be seing the Dr" was the owners phillosiphy. I think Dr's also can charge ($25?) to write a sick note because to store owners would re emburse the fee to the employee.

I've heard of that before, too. It only happened with people that abused sick days.

And that kind of mentality slows down the system just as much as parents who take their kids in for every tiny thing.

Wasn't the case in this situation. Just the case of a manager with a blanket policy on sick notes.

Either way, I agree that sick notes are ridiculous. If your employee is just...sick... he or she should spend the day in bed and get back tomorrow. It's just too bad that some losers have ruined it for normal people that catch a cold once a year, and just need a day to sleep it off.

Yeah, I don't know. Blanket sick note policies never made sense to me. If you're worried about people abusing the system, then go after the people who abuse it. We are human beings with the ability to discern between the two.

At my work we only require sick notes if we suspect abuse or you've had multiple (typically 5+) sick days in a year.

Bahahaha. I don't know where you work, but where I work we are littered with managers that have no idea how to properly manage people and so they create rules that help them avoid actually managing people. I kind of thought that was the norm.

Yeah it always baffles me when I hear the "Well if I treat you like that, then I have to treat everyone like that," nonsense.

If there were a $50 charge per doctor visit, I'd be up to $250 for March alone.
