The Calgary Flames announced today that they have signed forward Austin Carroll from the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League.
Carroll, a native of Scottsdale, Arizona, played four seasons with the Royals in the WHL and was drafted by the Flames in the seventh round (184th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. In 69 games during the 2014-15 season the 6’4”, 224 lb. winger led Victoria in points (77), goals (38), penalty minutes (124), and plus/minus (+23). Over his 268 game WHL career he recorded 196 points (95G, 101A) and 470 PIMs. The 20-year-old added another 12 points (8G, 4A) in 17 career WHL playoff games and he will have a chance to add to those totals in the 2014-15 WHL playoffs.

How the heck do you end up with an NHL contract when you are from Scottsdale, Arizona. That's a pretty cool story. I don't think there's anyone in the league from AZ?

Sean Couturier is the only other one, but he was raised in Bathurst - don't think he ever played in Arizona. Not sure if Carroll played there at all either; he played all his junior years in BC.

I believe the current consensus player to go #1 in the 2016 NHL entry draft is from Scottsdale Arizona (Auston Matthews).

He was actually born in Calgary, then moved to San Francisco, then Arizona. But played junior hockey in BC. All over the place.
Well that's interesting, I wonder why some sites list him as being from Arizona. He must have started playing seriously there when he was a kid? Or maybe it's just a preference thing for him?
Flames must've been waiting to see if they could get Kyle Baun before using another contract spot for Carroll.
Great to see a late round pick like this guy get a deal, he looked very good in camp/pre-season and had a strong final junior year. His combination of size and scoring touch is definitely a welcome addition to the farm system as well. Hopefully we've got a steal on our hands!

I believe his family actually does live in Scottsdale and that is where he goes in the offseason.
