IMO we should be keeping all of our seconds and thirds. It's a deep draft and I'm always of the thought that you have a better shot of getting something that's a real deal with more guesses. As much we/they scout players, it's really just a guess or gamble for who will actually turn out.

Few profiles on lads we're not likely to get unless something unforeseen occurs:

The industrial Dylan Strome - in depth:

Dylan Strome: NHL Draft War Room Prospect Profile
***
Why Noah Hanifin Is The Next Great American Defenseman
(although Zach Werenski might have something to say about this...)
***
Ivan Provorov profile
(one can only wish he drops to the Flames wheelhouse, but he might go off the board super early)

I trust our scouts and if they want to trade up to get the player they want, I'm all for it. Usually it's us trading down in order to get back a 2nd, it would be nice to go the other way for once.

I would be pretty stoked if we could get Provorov somehow and then land his D partner Pilon with one of our 2nds. Ready-made future defence pairing right there!

Provorov is looking like a top 10 pick, but he's exactly what we need.

Ive been watching Klimmer on the Wheatkings since the trade when I get a chance and I am amazed how Provorov is not projected in the top 10 of this draft. Its a bit scary. I think he can be another Brodie. He is extremely talented, great passer and has good hockey IQ

To me, im no scout but I am an avid hockey fan and someone who played for over a decade; Provorov is the 5th best prospect in this draft. Easily. Ive seen bits of Werenski and Hanifin. Not as impressed tbh. Slightly different types of d-men though.

My top 5 ranking right now would be

McDavid
Eichel
Marner
Strome
Provorov

I hope provorov drops out of the top 5 and we use our first plus a few later picks to move up and snag him. Provorov / Rafikov pairing would be frikin awesome in a few seasons.

Things have changed, I'm pretty sure Provorov is ranked in the top ten by most scouts. Button has him a #5 and I doubt we can move up to a top five pick. Maybe we'll be able to exchange picks with say Florida or Dallas if we throw in a second.

I could see Provorov going top 5 and Hanifin slipping a bit (but not outside of the top 10).

It seems like the only knock on Provorov is the fact he is Russian, but he seems very keen to stay in North America. I suspect he'll be the first D taken if he can convince teams he's not a flight risk.

He could be a Russian OEL.

I thought this post from My NHL Trade Rumors was a nice summary of the race to the bottom...

Really hope it isn't Kylington. Zboril would be fine depending on who is available. Merkley might end up being there at ~16

Why not Kylington? I think he is a top 10 pick that just fell due to injury.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but if the Flames do end up with the #16-20th OA pick I am starting to think the smart play is to try and trade down, especially if you can get something like a 1st in the early 20s plus a 2nd.

IMO there really isn't much of a drop off in talent dropping down say 5 to 7 picks and that extra 2nd could be another bullet in the chamber for a draft that Treliving thinks will be deep into the 60th OA pick.

edit: This also assumes no one surprising falls to the Flames.

I am alright if we trade down a little. I feel the same way that there isn't necessarily a talent drop off between the 15-30 picks.

I hope Nick Merkely or Matt Barzal fall to us at our spot. Or we trade up to get an impact player (Crouse, Provorov etc.)

Wouldn't mind adding another potential impact forward in the first round and then draft a bunch of d-man in the 2nd/3rd.

That edited part is the big if though. I still recall the 2004 draft when we traded down from 19th to 24th. The rumour at the time was that we were expecting Zajac to fall further, only to have New Jersey trade up to 20th and snag him. We ended drafting his teammate, Kris Chucko instead. I have no verifiable source, but I do recall hearing about it after the draft from media "insider" reports.

I do agree though, that the further you go in the 1st round, talent gradient starts to plane out a little bit.

Ivan Provorov
Mikko Rantanen
Brando Carlo
Jeremey Roy
Nicholas Meloche
Timo Meier ( If none of the guy above are left)

Any of those 6 guys which are all around the 10-30 range, I will be very happy.

Could argue from #20 down to the bottom half of round two the talent pool is not terrible just not concrete gap to differentiate. Maybe I'm not geeking out hard enough to see the gap this year if there is one.
