If you add Bouma (who missed the entire year due to injury), that makes 8.
The 29 that are no longer here include 4 of the top 5 scorers, the team captain/face of the franchise, and of course a HOF-worthy goaltender.
Has any other team in the league gone through that much turnover in that short a time frame? Any idea how this compares to other "successfully rebuilt" teams in recent memory (i.e. Chicago, St. Louis, maybe Nashville)?

I'm in the middle of writing a "State of the Rebuild" fan post (probably to be dump here at some point) looking at the roster changeover since the season where the rebuild started in earnest (Jarome Iginla trade).
Pretty interesting to see who survived two years of heavy trades and change.
What's more incredible is that following the massive roster turnover, and losing high scoring players and legendary goaltending, we are more competitive than we've been since several years before that season.
It tells me this: How you build, meaning building philosophy, is just as important as doing a good job of building, i.e. making shrewd moves. It's not just the talent of the players that is important, but how they fit together.

Anyone that looks at some of the teams the Rangers put on the ice pre-salary cap know's this.

That seems like a lot in such a short time frame.
Wow I could have sworn that Ferland played a few games last year.
One year later (2008/09), the Blackhawks finished with 104 points and went to the Conference Finals. Safe to assume that the "rebuild" was essentially complete by then -- of course they went on to win the Cup in 2009/10 after finishing with 112 points.
So in the two years from 2005/06 to 2007/08, only 8 roster players remained on the team, with Byfuglien, Keith, Seabrook, and Khabbibulin being the only key pieces.
Similarly, by 2007/08, the Hawks had most of their key pieces in place that would compete for a Cup a year later (and win it the following year), including Kane, Toews, Sharp, Versteeg, Ladd, Bolland, Barker, Burish, Adams.
I know there has already been a thread comparing the Flames and the Hawks; I guess the takeaway is that you can almost turn around an entire roster (with maybe the exception of already having your top 2 D pairing) by adding skilled forwards and filling out the role players.

For a team that went into a rebuild during that season this is not a surprise at all. There have been 3 trade deadlines and 2 offseasons.
The fact the team is doing this well when moving a good chunk of the players for picks and prospects is surprising.
Iginla, Bouwmeester, Stempniak, Glencross, Comeau, Baertschi were moved for picks and prospects that have no impact on the current Flames team.
Kipper retired, Cammy, Butler,, Cervenka and several others walked as UFA's.
Tangs was traded for Jones but that is the only deal I can think of from that roster where a player is still on the team.
The core that remains from that team however represent 3 of our top 4 D, our highest scoring forward, 2nd line center, 4th line centre, and some good depth forwards. Ramo was also part of the organization just not in the NHL yet.
Having a couple prospects develop rapidly has helped huge but a good chunk of the core of this current team was still in place 2 years ago
