I don't watch the Canucks enough to really get a feel for it but it makes Brodie's contract look extra amazing.
I would say a reasonable comparable would be Johnny Oduya from the Blackhawks (don't think he's as good as Hjalmarsson).

This kind of homerism is embarrassing to the fanbase.

Bouma is a better goalie than Tanev.
(couldn't find the glove save from last night vs Avs)

Seems like a good contract for a #2/3 guy. Like others have mentioned, they don't really have any other prospects coming up that project this high, so it is good for them. Seems like a majority of Canucks fans are happy.

Think it is pretty fair value for Tanev. Not a steal, but definitely far from poor value.

I have to admit, I was shocked when I saw this because I dont watch the Canucks and always remembered Tanev as 5/6 guy and poor replacement goaltender.
Obviously seeing as most people perceive this to be a fair deal that there was much I didnt know about Tanev.

It is HFboards so I don't put much weight behind it but I think this poll demonstrates peoples opinions on these two players.

Tanev is basically the new style defensive defender.
Skates well, reads the play, makes a good pass and doesn't try to do too much.
He's a very good player.

Which in asset management likely suggests that if you have to overpay to fill a need, pick the area where you have the fewest replacement options. To give the term to Tanev at his age isn't overly risky, so if you can manage the dollars it makes sense to allocate the extra dollars towards that area.
If they didn't sign him, what would it cost them to replace him?

Ya I was wondering the same thing as well. He obviously fits the needs of the team atm. Maybe I'm just comparing Brodie's contract to much. I know Brodie's not the best defensman in the league but I'd much rather have him on my team than Tanev. Their contracts are very similar.

What's so funny about that? Have you checked Brodie's underlying stats when not playing with Giordano? Tanev is better than Brodie defensively... you know the most important part about being a defenseman

Still an over payment non the less. It's not going to put the franchise in turmoil but it's most definitely not a steal. I've seen a lot of Tanev and he's nothing special just a decent defensive defenceman. If the homers on team 1040 agree it's an over payment not sure what the problem is.

I think this will be happening more often as teams start locking up supposed "core" pieces earlier and earlier, leaving them potentially in a bind later on, especially when their d-men start developing into steady NHLers a little later on in their career. It's becoming clearer that D-men, most often, start seeing their play elevate in their mid to late 20s.
It seemed like all teams wanted big forwards the last couple years, now a lot of teams want the steady d-man. I wonder what the next "sexy" trend in the NHL will be in the next season or so.

Tanev's a different type of player yes he may be a better defensive defensman but Brodie's more of a complete package imo.

Tanev progressed beyond a 5/6 a couple of years back.
For a top pairing defensive defenseman and elite penalty killer, it's a pretty fair deal.
He's a no drama-type blueliner. You rarely notice the guy, because he rarely makes a mistake.
