Plenty of people leave their bikes outside. I agree with habernac, if it is decent, I wouldn't. Best to have the crappiest bike on the rack. From keeping an eye on stolen bike threads, it seams most that go missing occur after 5:00 if they are left on racks outside.

If your building doesn't have indoor parking, maybe try one of the city lots?

Is there any difference in the lock chosen, or it doesn't really matter, of someone wants the bike it's not going to deter them?

I have the same concern as Reneee. I am planning to use my bike for everything and the likelihood of it being locked up downtown overnight or for long periods is high.

it doesn't matter. My friends was stolen outside the Petro Canada building (Suncor now?) at noon. He had a Kryptonite U-Lock. I would rent a space in the Bankers hall parkade. They had a bike room, that you locked your bike up in. Or get a crappy bike

Bike theft isn't even a downtown thing. Had my bike on the back of the car for 15 minutes at crowfoot coop. Come back out to find the enve seatpost/bonty saddle gone.

My woman and I had our bikes stolen from our locked condo storage on Christmas Eve.

If someone wants your bike enough when it's parked in public, they'll get it.

Yup. If I do keep it out side I use hardned steel motorcycle chain locks. You need a damn angle grinder. To get thru them . After a while you dont even realize the 10lbs in your backpack.

Definitely a difference. I buy my chains and locks at motorbike shops. Hardened steel.

And it's not as simple as showing them the lock, receipt and missing bike and waiting for the cheque. Most of them you have to submit it to your home insurance policy and then they'll pay for amounts not covered. If you have $1,000 coverage on your bike, and your deductible is $500, and your bike is worth $1,000, your home insurance company will give you $500 and the lock will give you nothing. Your insurance will likely go up for the next year too.

I use locks, but I'm guessing I'll never make a claim with the company, even if my bike gets stolen.

I'm not a cyclist and the bike that I do have is extremely cheap but in terms of security and locking up does it make sense to use two or three locks vs one? I would assume a thief would target a bike with a single lock instead of having to break in additional locks.

Most of the tests I've seen with pro thieves, if you have a U-lock where both legs log to the cross bar (so they can't just cut one) it takes about a minute per leg with a grinder.

So if you had 3 locks, that's 6 minutes of grinding, usually they have it covered with a towel for noise, so it might overheat, someone might see, their battery might die, or they might kill a cutoff disk.

I'd say that's your best bet. Cables are useless.

Also depends on what the locks are made of. Your typical ulock is high tensil steel. A towel may restrict the grinders motor sound but their is no way It will actually constrict the sound of metal grinding/cut.

That works. If they have a pole out front of shop or hand rails in front of the doors I will lock up there. If they have a problem with it I just say " Fine I'll take my business else where. O by the way is your manager handy to have a brief conversation?" That makes them back track their postion.


In Victoria here there is a flag pole out front of the YMCA facility. One guy consistently locks his bike up on it. Its the only thing visible in a square km. Its a plaza.

So - did anyone else check it out? We went. It was pretty tiny but we talked to a few guys from Fernie/Golden, and some Calgary guys. It has potential and I hope it grows in size every year.

I went as well. It was small. I walked around a few times and chatted with the vendors. I wish there were a few more local shops representing and I had brought the kids. They would have enjoyed it as well.
