Parking shouldn't be a problem in the burbs at all.
On 2 car attached streets with 35ft frontage you have 2 spots in the garage and 2 spots on the driveway and .5 spots on the street. Anyone who needs more than 4 spots on a regular basis should by a larger lot with a 3 car garage. If your truck doesn't fit in your garage or on your drive way you should have bought a house that can accommodate it.
This leaves the .5 parking spots for visitors.
For the lane homes again you have 2 spots in the back and 2 on the street out front so you lose the half visitor spot.
The real problem is people having crap in their garages or too many vehicles.
In Ottawa, maximum parking on the street without a permit is 3 hours, City wide. Also no street parking overnight if more than 7 cm snow forecast. Seems to work well.
I'm guessing there are a lot fewer people in Ottawa that insist on driving ####-off huge trucks so they can never use them to haul anything ever except maybe a big box from Ikea that one time.
