Total points by the player divided by total goals scored by the Flames during that season.

The Flames have scored 207 goals this season (after today), and Gaudreau has 57 points. That means he has a point on 27.5% of all Flames' goals this season.

In Nieuwendyk's case, he had 92 points and the Flames scored 397 goals that year. That's a point on 23.1% of the Flames' goals in 1987-88.

These advanced stats are getting completely absurd.

That's not advanced, and IMO it's not at all absurd either.

It's just a good way to measure the offensive importance of a player to his team compared to a player from another era.

Except its pretty much been proven that attempts to compare eras is effectively futile.

Before today I'd never heard of this stat before ever.

I think comparing eras would be directly comparing the point totals with each other. This stat tries to compensate for the difference of era.

It's just a very simple way to show that despite Gaudreau's numbers being far inferior to Nieuwendyk's in his rookie season, Gaudreau is actually a bigger part of this offense than Joe was to that Flames teams offense.

Default With the 104th overall pick, the Flames select LW John Gaudreau

I mentioned this in the qotd thread but I'll put it here too... I remember Wotherspoon in an interview at the world juniors a couple years ago when Johnny won it with the US. They asked him what it's like playing against gaudreau and I think he said it was like trying to check a ghost. He's just that elusive and sneaky at finding the right spot on the ice. From what I've seen so far in his career... He might be the most elusive player in the NHL when it comes to slipping checks.

That doesn't mean Gaudreau is a better offensive player than Nieuwendyk was.

When the Flames scored 397 goals in 1987-88, they were the highest-scoring team in the league and set a franchise record. This year, the Flames are above average offensively, but not a top team. It would be more appropriate, if you want to compare across eras, to compare the percentage of points by Gaudreau vs. Nieuwendyk out of the entire NHL in their respective rookie years.

It looks pretty sharp IMO, but I'm not a huge fan of our logo. So I'm in the minority.

Minority? You are the first person I've ever heard say the Flaming C isn't cool.

Never said it made Gaudreau a better offensive player than Joe, just that Gaudreau is a bigger part of this offense than Joe was to that offense.

27.5% > 23.1%

I believe it was Griffin Reinhart who said that.

I remember it being used here to bolster Iginla's importance to our team. He would often score a higher percentage of our points than other top players on other teams because the Flames didn't score much, so it doesn't need to be an era comparison.
