A Two big things. The first is shale oil — the U.S. will be energy independent by the end of 2016.
Quote:
A Americans have a reputation for being ignorant and short-sighted, but I would be stunned if there was a single person in Congress who would think this a bad idea. If you bring Alberta into the country, the U.S. becomes technically energy independent overnight. I would expect ratification of the expansion to sail through Congress in a matter of hours.
Apparently the US is going to be energy independent in about a year and a half, but they'd be happy to scoop up Alberta to become energy independent "overnight".
So, umm, he sees this happening before the end of 2016? Or, as I might suspect, this is just a bunch of poorly thought-out bull#### that the Herald should be embarrassed to print?
I'd rather be from Quebec than the US. I'm by no means a separatist but if we were to do something radical like this, I'd much prefer having BC and Sask join us in a new country.
Could I have dual citizenship? Best of both worlds..
I can never understand the dislike for America/Americans that some posters on CP have. Canada, without the USA as our friendly neighbor, would be a far different country.
Hell, we might even be speaking Russian and have Putin as our President.

The one thing the U.S. has that we don't is areas with more comfortable climates. Maybe it makes me a little superficial, but if I could live in a warm area of the U.S. and have the same job security and decent health insurance, I would probably really have to consider it.
If I had to "join" the U.S. and still live in a wintery area, then why bother...

You don't understand the "senseless" hate because you agree with Republicans on social issues. That is by far Canadians' biggest beef with what goes on down there, and since you are very right wing socially, you fail to see what the rest of us see.
Also, your language is inflammatory. Nobody hates the country. Canadians feel other emotions - jealousy, pity etc. - but not hate.

You're seriously going to go with that? The country is more than just the land... its the people, the politics, the culture, the attitude. There has been plenty of USA bashing on here... and dare I even say hate.

Huh? I wasn't saying anything about the land. What an odd comment!
It's obvious I was talking about exactly what you state - the people, politics, culture, and attitude.
And yes, of course there's bashing. How can you not bash a country with gun laws and policies like theirs?
That's a lot different than hate, though.

I don't 'HATE' the US. I just love Canada infinitely more.
Because being Canadian supersedes, wealth, the value of oil, and economics. If this ever happened, I would be packed and moving hours after it was announced.
I am a Canadian first and foremost, and an Albertan second. The only benefit this would bring is money, and my Canadian citizenship is the one thing I value more than anything, and it isn't for sale, to anyone. Anyone who would consider this, has no National pride.
National pride is a stupid concept.
The world would be a lot better off if we started thinking about everyone as us rather than splitting everyone up into us vs them.
If we are talking hypotheticals, if Alberta was to leave Canada, going as an independent Country makes the most sense by far.
I think joining the US wouldn't change much in Alberta. States have a lot of independence in the US and Alberta would remain culturally as is I think.
The biggest problem I would see is that it would bring down wages a tonne as there would be a rush of cheap labour from the rest of the states.

Do you not understand the difference?
Exactly. I don't hate the US, I just think their gun laws are ridiculous, their health system is ridiculous, and the amount of influence religion has on their politics is ridiculous.
If there was even a chance of Alberta joining the US, I'd be outta here. But I know that's never, ever happen. So the article is a complete waste of time.

If you don't want people to comment on your inflammatory statements, don't post them on a public message board. I am sure 'The Dinger' has a comment section you can go to find like minded opinions.

Would you have been happier if I softened my post by using the word "dislike" instead of "hate"?
Edit: changed my original post from "senseless hate" to "dislike". Hope this is more acceptable to people.

Yeah, its a great place to visit. I much prefer Canada though. And I'm willing to pay a premium to live here.
