Don't think it's a surprise the Avs rookies are having a down year after losing a top line two-way centre and replacing him with a 37 year old winger.

I am sure St. Louis is saying thank you right now. How did they let him walk? It just seemed very strange, maybe he really didn't want to play there anymore for reasons we don't know about.

From everything I have read it sounded like Av's offered the same contract as St. Louis. I also read a quote from Stastney that said the only team other than the av's he wanted to sign with was his home town of St.Louis.

Iggy is a beast! I'm gonna make a very bold prediction and say that he will win a cup as a Flame several years down the road

That avs team is pretty mismanaged.
Berra for a 2nd? Sign a 37 year old winger to a 3 x $5 million deal?
The impact it's had is pretty obvious. Varlomov has a near identical save percentage as last year, yet the team is 6 spots worse overall in GA/GP, 21st overall in the league, 15th last year with Statsny.

Even still, Stastny is only putting up 41 points on the Blues.

Why is this mismanagement? Iginla is pretty much the best FA signing this year.
Stastny isn't gone because of signing Iginla. Iginla was signed becase Stastny was leaving.

Years from now when I look back at his stat sheets, that's what I will remember the most. Seriously, F both those lockouts. Without them Iggy would be pushing for 750 career goals when it's all said and done.
I hope he gets traded away to a contender next season. I know he took the big deal for stability, but man do I want to see him win a cup in his lifetime.

LOL.... apparently whenever a team struggles, it's Iginla's fault.
The Avs are teeming with young talent that haven't put up good enough numbers this year. Plus, their defense is bad. That's why they suck.

Iginla is great at individual accomplishments.
But at the NHL Level, his team accomplishments is lacking.
Only got the Flames past the 1st Round Once.
Sorry, but I am way more emotionally invested in this Flames team and players like Gaudrea, Monahan, Hudler, Buoma, Russell, Brodie then I was about Iginla.

But as we can see by Iginla leading the Avs in points, and outpacing Statsny, points aren't everything.
With Statsny, St.Louis is pretty much the same defensively but are averaging better goal production.
Basically, with the addition of Statsny they are still suffocating defensively but are also offensively potent; they haven't given up defense to acquire offense.
Without Statsny, Colorado has plummeted in the goal scoring department and is also considerably worse defensively even with their goaltending maintaining similar save %s.

I can agree with this with the last 3 years or so he was here. Before that though there was some pretty exciting seasons that most unfortunately were underachieving years and one massive overachieving year.

See, this is the problem with him and the same problem existed when he was on the Flames near the end of his tenure. I really don't believe he is able to be a complimentary piece at this point. His presence is just too strong and he casts a large shadow but he also isn't an elite player anymore and can't carry a team.
I know it's not going to be a popular opinion, but I do feel that the Avs would be better off without him just like we are. Maybe if Iginla was on a good team with a really strong veteran presence, but I think he has too much gravitational pull on a young team like the Avs and he would in Calgary too. Perhaps over the next couple of seasons, the Avs and Iginla will adapt.
It's really time to turn the page for us though.

Because he's declining in production, and forwards aren't an area of weakness for the Avalanche. Gaping holes on defense is their issue.

Signing Iginla doesn't fill the hole left by statsny. Spending 5 million on a defender would've been a much better use of capspace and would likely have had a more significant impact on the success of this season. Obviously it's not as simple as just signing someone, but, their issue last season was defense and it's their issue again this season. Iginla doesn't help that at all. 40 year old Iginla probably really doesn't help that.
The Avs under Roy remind me a bit of the Stars with Brett Hull as part of their management group.

And how were they suppose to address this through FA's? The same way to Oilers tried too?
You actually believe having one of the 5 million D FA's would have helped them... They were all 4/5 D

It means that the young players feel small in his presence and aren't leading the way they should be (just my theory). The are letting him carry the team (or letting him try anyway). Introducing a strong alpha into any work place can have a similar effect.
Think about how leaders emerged in the wake of Iginla's departure from the Flames and now look at it in reverse.

The Avs were never going to fill their hole on D through free agency.
What they did wrong was to let another hole develop at forward, and then use their resources to try to plug that instead of addressing the hole they had already.
If they had re-signed Stastny, and then (biting the bullet) traded one of their young star forwards for a good solid defenceman, they might be in a playoff spot today. And depending on the trade, they might still have had the cap space to sign Iginla as a complementary piece.

Iginla would be perfect for a team like the Oilers or Leafs.
Both teams have serious morale issues and a restless fan base.
Those two teams wont be in the conversation of making playoffs for atleast 2 years.
Iggy can go and play on teams like this and get his 20 mins a game icetime and 1st line powerplay and get his goals and points he loves scoring and not have to worry about the team winning.
For the Avs, they have young players that need the icetime and responsibility to develop - but instead that icetime has to go to Iginla first because of his Hall of Fame stature.
