Default Why Leaving Canada Makes Sense for Alberta

Here's an article that discusses Alberta secession to the US:

http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/st...ml?id=10900926

The article doesn't put much weight into cultural impacts and at first glance, I question the accuracy of some of the figures given in the article.

Anyone have any thoughts?

My initial sentiment is the same as yours. But why? The article seems to suggest it would be beneficial to Alberta.

It would be beneficial to the US, not to Alberta.

Because being Canadian supersedes, wealth, the value of oil, and economics. If this ever happened, I would be packed and moving hours after it was announced.

I am a Canadian first and foremost, and an Albertan second. The only benefit this would bring is money, and my Canadian citizenship is the one thing I value more than anything, and it isn't for sale, to anyone. Anyone who would consider this, has no National pride.

it's click bait.

The reasons he listed Alberta would leave Canada would nearly be a duplicate of why Texas would leave the United States, yet, that is whom he is proposing Alberta will join.

Terrible idea. What has America done in the last 50 years that would make them a good candidate for a Canadian Provence to secede and join?

Where his analysis falls apart is that he assumes Albertans could not figure out the currency issue, thereby making it an automatic they would join the US. Or that an independent Alberta could not exist.

I think any separatist movement in Alberta which has "joining the US" as part of the decision would end very quickly with a "No".

However his economic points about subsidizing other regions make for interesting reading.

So this would mean I would be an American citizen and could pack up and move to Hawaii full time? Sounds good to me!

I really think people are fooling themselves if they believe this to be true. It also negates the fact that Alberta wasn't always a province that paid in to equalization. Just because we are paying in now doesn't mean that will always be the case.

Yup I'd def put in for transfer to BC or perhaps Ontario before I ever became an American citizen in Alberta.

Can anyone confirm that every Albertan pays roughly $6,000 more into the federal budget then we receive back?

Not to mention the fact that when you want to 'hitch your wagon' to any nation, why would you choose the US?
