Knew he was beat, dove, ended up miles behind the play, when a player with his speed might have caught up and disrupted the chance.

I think divers get so used to doing it, it becomes second nature to go down. Therrien is going to get a fine.

Thats hilarious. I'd love to know what Therrien thinks about that.

Does the coach get reimbursed by the organization for their fines? Because theres no implications for coach compensation to the salary cap so they can be paid anything, or is it just a risk they take?

I always figured that the day Hartley destroyed John Tortorella's career Brian Burke was laughing himself into a hernia so hard that his signature on the Hartley's reimbursement cheque would be illegible.

That is a dive and a diver, no question.

I still think that you shouldn't have supplemental discipline (a fine) if a penalty wasn't called on the play, which it wasn't apparently.

Yeah, that was bad. Sometimes I like to give them the benefit of the doubt when something is a legitimate penalty and the refs are being distracted or just oblivious... "diving" brings attention to it. Not that diving is ever fine, but I get it.

In this case, Subban was blatantly trying to fabricate a penalty call against the Sens.

The worst thing about that dive is that he's not only diving to draw a penalty but he's essentially trying to take away an odd man rush because he's beat on the play. It appears those officials were wise to his antics but a crappier official may have called a penalty not only putting the Senators a unjustly a man short but robbing them of a scoring opportunity.

I can only hope. Maybe he will want to play with his brother.

I am actually surprised the whole Canucks team hasn't been fined for diving yet...

Embarrassing. Have to say, my opinion of Subban has been shifting given recent events. Glad our players aren't the type to get notoriety for being floppers.

Nope. Any deterrent of diving is a good thing. It shouldn't be considered a strategy at all. The discipline is for being a doosh who puts a black eye on the game, not because they tricked a ref.

Though this would be a minor inconvenience for Therrien, what is he going to do? Not play Subban?

Furthermore, though there was no benefit on this particular play, he wasn't assessed a penalty on the play it appears so if that would have somehow helped their team by taking a player out of the play (or drawing a penalty), it still benefits the Habs. Fining a player but not calling the call on the ice/suspending them seems like a waste of time really. At least they're publicly shamed.

Dear NHL referees,

Please do your jobs when the opportunity arises. Do not force the executives of the NHL to call penalties for you. If you see a dive, please call it, worrying about offending players or "the code" be damned. You are only making your job easier. Eliminating diving by calling it right when you see it (no even up calls) will leave you to interpret the vast amount of plays as legitimate penalties, rather than worrying about whether it was a dive or not. You will only be helping the game of hockey long term, and making your lives less stressful. Thank you in advance.

Signed,

Every non-Canuck hockey fan.
