This never crossed my mind, Debbie. Enjoy it!

Goals are meaningless in today's NHL. What are his advanced stats?!?!?!?!?!?

Huge, huge progression from Sean. We're so lucky to have this guy.
Good post. I hate seeing the other facets of his game being overlooked because he's close to 30 now. He is getting better every game at faceoffs, and despite his 30 goals, plays responsibly in the offensive zone. Isn't just a floater there.

What's more is his defensive play in the neutral and D-zone. He makes so many little smart plays I think many average fans miss, which is shame. It's almost unbelievable how good he plays in all 3 zones as a 20 year old. (Note to Sven if you wanna play in the show, watch Sean video)

But at the same time, it doesn't really matter what Joe Blow thinks, it matters what 'Artley sees and what Treliving sees.

Maybe I'm getting carried away, but I often wonder how many goals he would have scored this year had he been able to play with an offensive focus all year. When Backlund, Colborne and Stajan were out, Monahan was playing a bit more of a defensive role (shutting down the other team's top lines, etc.). I don't think he was as focused on his offense as we had no one else to play defense. Once Backlund came back, his goals started to pile up again. If he had not had to make that temporary shift in his game - could he be closer to 40?

In addition to this - I also think it's crazy how well he played defensively during that period (and continues to now). He's a solid player. Crazy talent and he's only 20.

On the other hand, that time gave him some valuable learning experience in playing a defensively responsible game, which while not as sexy, can be pretty valuable too. It's all part of moving towards being a complete player who can be counted in all facets.

Agreed, and I would add that this also helps confirm the value of Backlund and Stajan. It isn't just about goal scoring, and those guys, when healthy help the Flames win games.

Also he was sick to start the year and started very slowly. Only had 2 goals in first 11 games. Also had a 13 game scoreless period in december/January. Without those he might have been able to hit 40.

Since mid January his pace has been very close to a 50 goal season.

I agree.

In fact, in the long run, this may actually help to improve his offensive numbers. With some skilled players, you just can't put them out in critical situations because you can't trust their play without the puck. Monahan is the kind of player you can rely on when you're protecting a 3-2 lead – and when you put him out there, he just might score that 4th goal to put the game away.

Here's an extra reason why I want to see the Flames make the playoffs this year: to see what Monahan will do in that environment. You can never tell till it happens, but I have a feeling he will thrive because of his smarts and his two-way game. If so, he'll be our version of Thomas More – ‘a man for all seasons’.

Agree with defence => offence. The better you are defensively, the more ice you get, often against some top line offensive players who aren't great at defence (looking at you Kessell).

The HuMonGaus line is going to have an even bigger year next year IMO.

Just now. I will bow to concensus though it beats Brodano hands down.

I actually kind of like it. It feels like it's trying a little too hard, but that's easy to forgive.

Derek Wills @Fan960Wills
Growing up, #Flames Sean Monahan worked on his shot by firing pucks into a fence. His Dad had to replace 8 or 9 fence boards per week!

Stamkos for sure. Maybe Tavares. Skinner had 31 his rookie season I think he was like 18-19. Malkin and Ovechkin both had over 30 their rookie seasons. Some good company.
