They don't even have to pan out. Just off of the comparisons to Dan Dekeyser I bet he's worth at least a third rounder today. It's like Treliving just traded nothing for a top 100 draft pick. Lovely asset management.

And (in my opinion) more importantly, a partially developed asset. A free third rounder is terrific, but especially with defencemen, you need to wait years before reaping the benefits. So as a bonus, this signing is more in line with the timeframes of the forwards we have.

I think aside from the obvious here - the fact that he has a chance to make the team sometime in the near future, and the fact that Calgary is looked upon as a team on the rise - I wonder if there is a couple of added incentives to signing here.
Firstly, Flames have signed college free agents lately and they played in the NHL. I think that is a big thing.
They also showed they are not afraid of ignoring contract statuses - vets have been traded away in favor of some young guys, vets (Setoguchi, O'Brien, etc) have been demoted and a spot for a young guy opened up. They also showed that they are not afraid of 'losing an ELC' year in Poirier, which many other teams would try and keep.
The first is definitely valid I think. The second may be a bit of a reach.. however:
What I think may be JUST as important is the fact that Calgary doesn't screw with their players. You are injured? You will be properly evaluated and taken care of (not like another Alberta team). You feel you don't get a chance here? Heck, we will be fair to you and will even trade you to a rival. Flames could have just held onto Sven's rights for a long time even if he didn't want to sign, even after he goes to Europe. Some teams do just that.
Flames seem to be in the business of not only winning, but in treating players fairly. One thing that stuck in my head was the mandate from the ownership group a while ago (forgot the timeline now): "Don't look to sign players for the cheapest possible. Sign them to fair deals." I am sure the players very much appreciate having an organization that treats them well.
Really great that the Flames signed him. He may become a core piece down the road, a solid depth piece that helps the Flames win, or he may amount to nothing at all in the long-term. Can't go wrong with signing a guy with legitimate potential and who also helps shore-up an area of weakness.

His value was just approximated in the 3rd rounder range; we may have to settle for someone in the Nicklas Lidstrom mould.

Never heard of the kid before today so I asked a couple of friends if they knew about him, not much on current playing style but apparently he was a skilled but very undersized player in his youth and had a late growth spurt.

Poirier slides if he doesn't play 9 game though right? Seems like they are keeping that in mind with his deployment right now.

Based on the quotes, they seem to have meant prospects. And I might give them that, simply because of Nurse.
But organizationally, the Oilers might have three NHL calibre defencemen, total.

Well I guess MacT is laughing at us and the joke is on the Flames for 2 reasons: Morrison can hardly toe drag and secondly, the oilers don't even play defense!

I don't think so - he's played more than 9 "pro" games this season, just most in the A. I think the "slides" rule is only for kids returning to junior isn't it?
Or am I missing something?

It's about NHL games, not pro games. It doesn't matter how many AHL games he's playing - if he plays less than 10 in the NHL, his contract slides.

One quote I saw had them including Hanifin as one of their prospects.
The level of stupid there is funny though. They actually thought growing up an Oiler fan was a big factor. When has that ever been a factor for a kid with an agent signing anywhere?

Yes, the 9 games do count. I just figured he will get 4 more games from now and through into the playoffs. You have a big point though - he may indeed not get his 9.

Really the kid probably just looks at Schultz as the reason not to go to Edmonton.
Saw how poorly he was developed after being thrown to the wolves and thought "I don't want to be that guy in 3 years."
Might actually be a smart kid who wants to go somewhere he will develop properly.
