If the claims in this video regarding FIFA and the World Cup are correct I would prefer Canada not to bother with a hosting effort.

Canada probably wasn't anticipating to host the event and likely expected more competition during the bid round.

Let's take Ronaldo and Messi as an example. You think the Portugese and Argentinian FA are going to ban them or anyone else for that matter for taking a stance against Slavery. The optics would be terrible. You think there would be no backlash? From fans and players? Punishing someone for speaking out against such a matter? Same for FIFA. Whose side do you think the public and players would take? A lot of noise is created. Then you have the big corporations involved.

Saying and doing are two different things. If Ronaldo stands up tomorrow and says i'm not playing in a Russian World Cup due to racism, anti-homosexuality and the invasion of Ukraine and will retire after Euro 2016. Portugal would just be like ok, we can't select you then, that's your choice to not play. And then if Portugal makes a stand and says to FIFA, we're not playing in a Russian World Cup. FIFA will just go thank you, you're suspended. Nothing FIFA does is surprising. This is a federation that suspended TOGO because they didn't show up to a game because their bus GOT SHOT AT and two officials were killed.

You are right, if a bunch of these players and a bunch of federations and a bunch of sponsors do it then yeah FIFA is under pressure. But who wants to go first and who wants to take that risk just in case the others chicken out and don't follow suit. It would almost have to be England, Brazil or the current champions Germany.

You're right. It makes far more sense to assume Canada felt the need to waste money on a hopeless bid.

Do you ever actually read the things you write?

A Qatari world cup is just beyond stupid. Use slave labor to build stadiums that will never be used after the tournament.

Not to mention the disruption to the CL and European football.

I honestly hope the big 5 leagues band together and just boycott the world cup. Too much to risk mid-season.

Champions League is the big money maker in soccer, and that's controlled by UEFA. Unlikely they'd go against FIFA.

FIFA needs UEFA more than UEFA needs FIFA.

Much like the NHL has given international hockey the big middle finger, in my mind it's only a matter of time before UEFA give it to FIFA, and this should be the catalyst.

And although the CL is huge, the combination of the top 5 leagues is bigger if you ask me.

If I recall correctly, Bundesliga is the most attended professional league in the world, regardless of sport.

I bet most International soccer players don't care about the optics or the situation.

They just want to play soccer.

FIFA wasn't giving the bribe money back, so of course Qatar is keeping it. But it'll be very interesting to see how badly the next two World Cups bomb in terms of foreign visitors. Russia and Qatar are both places almost no one wants to go to at the moment.

This has been an unrepentant boondoggle from start to finish.

I'd disagree. I bet most players want to win their respective titles, then compete in the WC during the summer.

And I bet most owners don't want their $100 million men playing for some other team halfway through the season.

Theres limits to that too. I mean, theres only so many games you can expect athletes to play. Players on big European clubs are already playing tons and tons of games and adding WC Qualifying and then the WC into the mix is rough.
