Can someone explain why these undrafted guys all of a sudden is coveted by every team in the NHL? Did the scouts not do their work in watching these college players?
Zero. If Wotherspoon is behind him, he's already way behind progression. A guy with two full years of top pairing in AHL vs college free-agent shouldn't even be close.
At worst it adds competition to a position lacking it, which I think was an important factor in the development of guys like Jooris, Ferland, Granlund and Gaudreau.

I think he was drafted, but then did not sign with his drafting team, and then after a certain number of years in the NCAA they become UFA. Same thing people were scared might happen to Johnny Hockey if he chose to go back to college this year and not sign with us.

Oilers playing at the bottom every year has to make them a less attractive destination. They are poorly structured and just not a team or organization that's very organized; "which can't be good for a player with his kind of minutes." I think he would be a good fit with Calgary and would have better mentors. Here he can step right in on a better structured team that's geared to winning.

He wasn't drafted.

Most college draftees are either freshmen or havent even started their college season's yet.
By the time they are Juniors or Seniors, their games may have taken big strides. It's prudent to check every talent pool. If ego about not noticing him at first causes them not to look at a guy again, that's a problem.
It makes me happy that college free agents are getting more attention. It shows young kids that they can keep working towards their dream even if undrafted, and that college is as good of a path as any to the NHL.

They are pretty much late bloomers. Morrison didn't even get a college scholarship until he was 20, while most NHL draft picks get them before they are 18.
Also coveted by every NHL team because they are free. No assets are given and they are further along in their development than a 17 or 18 year old.

It is, he was not good enough draft year to be drafted, but has developed in the follow 3-4 years to become a good prospect, ie late bloomer

If this was true he'd have to be in his senior year right now (and then wouldn't be able to sign until August). He's a Junior looking to sign before his senior season means he was undrafted, or he would have to be singing with his drafted team.

-Defenseman Kenny Morrison (Western Michigan): He's a junior this season, and NHL teams were interested in signing him after his sophomore season. He decided to stay in school, but might leave this season. He's 6-2, 205.
"Even when he entered Western Michigan, it seemed like he should have been a draft pick," Button said. "Now teams are saying, 'He sure should have been.'"

It's usually guys who were late bloomers and not on the scouts' radar when they were draft eligible. Morrison is 23, so he would have first been draft eligible in 2010. He was still playing Midget hockey in 2009-10.
Most of these guys don't amount to much in the NHL, but teams still need players for the AHL, and other than their salary, it's a free acquisition. Occasionally, you get a guy like Jooris, and it makes it worthwhile.

I'd never heard of him 5 minutes ago but he sounds like exactly the kind of prospect we need. RH...
Doesn't surprise me that he would be interested either. Looking like the Flames are going to be competitive faster than anticipated, lots of good young players but they're all at F so definitely room for him to crack the roster, lots of cap space, close to home.
