Kings now have 14 loser points, tied for second most in the league.
Imagine if they half of those hadn't made it to OT, they would be tied with Colorado and one point up on Dallas.

For comparison sakes next most in the west is the Oilers with 13 and then Winnipeg with 12. No one else in the playoffs or in the race has more than 10.

1 point out of playoffs behind two teams, 12 games left. I'd have taken that in a heart beat at the start of the year or right after our 8 game skid. Flames just need to keep winning at the pace they have over the past few weeks and they'll take care of business.

7-5 likely gets them in but still, Flames shouldn't be taking anyone for granted and honestly as good as the Flames season is going on paper are they really better than anyone?

So LA has 14 loser points. Their W-L record is 34-36. If the NHL had a better point system they would be well behind the Flames' 38-32.

edit: JohnnyT beat me to it

Or imagine they were better 4 on 4; they'd be well ahead of us and securely in a playoff spot.

I wish the NHL would do away with these loser points. If you lose in OT you should get nada zero zilch points.

I agree, especially when teams just lock it down for the last few minutes when tied. Stand behind the net with the puck for the last 15 seconds

Then they would deserve the points as much as any other team that wins a game.

I don't mind the loser point for losing after regulation. My problem is a game that ends in regulation doesn't award an equal number of points as a game that goes as little as 30 seconds longer than 60 minutes.

The 3-2-1 system just makes more sense as every game is worth the same amount of points regardless of the length

Seems to be doing as intended... Closer points race

Of course, the flip side of that is if they had won half of those games, they'd be sitting comfortably in second place and it would be one more spot the Flames couldn't get.

Also, having those games not go to OT doesn't necessarily mean they would have been regulation losses for the Kings, some of them only went to OT because the Kings couldn't hold third period leads. Both the Flames' OT wins over LA were comebacks by the Flames. If the Kings could have held those two third period leads, they'd have two extra points and the Flames would have 4 fewer. The Kings' current 1 point lead would be 7 instead.

Of course you just couldn't close it down in regulation Ducks. Crappiest league leading team ever.

The Avs have 11 loser points and the Stars have 10.

The same sort of thing can be said of the Avs and Stars, they'd be in the thick of the playoff race had they won half of their OT/SO games.

The Bhawks-Rangers game showed us that each team's back up goalie is worthy of playing big games down the stretch. Darling with the SHUTOUT stopping all 25 shots while Talbot faced 30 shots. Talk about the Bhawks getting revenge over the Rangers winning by the identical 1-0 score. The teams split the season series winning in the visiting rink. Nice goal by Richards against his former team. The Rangers had some nice shots in the final seconds of the game. The Kings-Ducks game really did look and feel like a playoff game as it was quite intense in the Ducks 3-2 OT win. Gibson was stellar in goal facing 31 shots and puts the Ducks into 1st place overall. Oh yeah, the BJs beat the Oilers 4-3 in the SO as McElhinney faced 47 shots in the win, good for him. These teams like the SO because 5 days ago in Columbus the BJs won in the same fashion.

IMO I'd rather have the Canucks win, Kings are hot on our tail and we're fighting for the wild card/3rd spot.

Agreed. At this point in time, on Saturday you cheer against which ever one of them has the least amount of points. With this few games left in the season you really have to stop worrying about who you think the better team actually might be and just deal with the reality of the point situation, not enough games left to want anything other than what is mathematically best for the Flames.

That is assuming that the goal is to see the Flames make the playoffs one way or another.
