It's possible that he's thinking, "I can have a life here, people will trust me and look up to me as a moral leader", but he knows that Rick and Co. know his story. Know what he did to the last flock. So he wants them gone so that he can't undermine Alexandria's trust in him as a priest.

Anyway, Maggie heard the whole thing, so it'll be interesting to hear how she deals with that. The thing is, it's probably not going to get a chance to come to a head since the conflict is going to hit immediately upon the start of the next episode thanks to Nicolas.

One thing I wonder about is if that the doctor abusing his wife and kid is well known by the people in Alexandria, but the people decide to ignore it because he is very valuable to the community.

I guess I'll just have to buy that Gabriel's ethical conflict has simply culminated in their arrival at Alexandria and his witness to the juxtaposition of the group in and out of civility. Just seemed really strange and out of nowhere.

And just another little side thought:

I find it interesting how some called out Melissa McBride (Carol) for her unconvincing acting, yet are completely forgiving of Micheal Cudlitz's (Abraham) often wooden, cliche tough guy performance. The role in this episode catered to that style, but more often than not the character can be very distracting due to these qualities.

Yeah, and I also think he feels guilt about how he let people die before and didn't help so now he is trying to compensate for his previous inaction.

It's all about perspective. Gabriel didn't see everything the group endured to get them to the point that they had to take the necessary but unpalatable action they did. From his perspective, it looked like they were behaving badly.

i wasn't watching this episode as closely as i should. did they indicate whether or not glen put the coward dude in the van with them? at first when eugene had the gun pointed i assumed it was on the coward. then i realized it was probably just on tara in case she turned.

I think Glenn saved him. I think it is going to come back and bite them though.

this is a guy that chose to escape his own church through the floorboards and be outside with the zombies rather than spend any more time with the Grimes gang. there's other examples (e.g. hopelessly trying to scrub the blood stains off the church floor, being forced to face his wife (?) during the supply run) but I'm satisfied with the evidence that he really doesn't like Rick's posse and would instantly dump them in favor of naive, strawberry providing Alexandrian parishioners.

Good points.

Ya, when I reflect on his attitude towards the group a little more it starts to make sense. I'm not so torn up about it now. I think the jarring part was simply that he did this seemingly out of nowhere. I know they only have so much time in an episode and season, but I think if they had invested a little more into Gabriel's conflict (rather than him seeing the welcome message and tearing up the bible) during the episode it wouldn't have seemed so abrupt.

Really, if anyone was going to do this it would be Gabriel. It does make sense.

There's a pretty awesome contrast going on right now between civilization and a group tempered by doing anything to survive.

As to the quoted posts, I was fine with the episode up until the Gabriel gone Judas speech. Seems like an absolute contradiction of character given what he has done himself and how, essentially, Rick's group got him to 'paradise'. Strange time to draw such a distinct ethical line in the sand for that character, and at such an abrupt moment. I can't recall anything so egregious, outside of the Terminus church massacre, that would have given him any justification.

I appreciate the tension that is definitely going to arise out of this, but I think it was poorly executed narrative once again. Too bad considering how solid an episode and how great the show has been since Aaron came a'knockin at the barn. I've read the responses in the thread concerning Gabriel's motivations, but I'm not quite there with accepting this turn (other than he's a complete coward). Any other insights?

Oh, and mother-dick...

Rick Grimes: You're a man of God. Have some faith.
Hershel Greene: I can't profess to understand God's plan, but Christ promised a resurrection of the dead. I just thought he had something a little different in mind.

If he was a priest, wouldn't that mean he couldn't marry? I thought the woman was just one of his parishioners.

Did we ever see Rick et al tell Gabriel what the Termites were doing; and had attempted to do to them? Without that vital piece of info, I could see Gabriel wanting to distance himself from the evil group.

Personally I think Deanna's comment of "you've given me a lot to think about" was more of an indication that perhaps Gabriel is somebody who they don't want in Alexandria.

I am not sure if Rick's group told him outright, but he was/or should have been aware of buddy losing his leg, and he found the half eaten/cook leg at the camp site. I think Gabriel knows what happend at Terminus.

Best episode since the terminus saga. Lots of great moments throughout and I think you will definitely see a fracturing of the main group coming up. Hard to tell which way it's all going to go and there are suggestions of another group still to consider. This is the first time in a long time I've been intrigued by the possibilities of the plot progression. I never mind the slower episodes if they really focus on excellent character development, but it's always nice to have some significant action thrown in.

BTW, did anyone's stomach turn a little watching Noah's death? We've all seen an incredible amount of violence on this show to the point of being completely desensitized, but that felt too personal and real to ignore. I was really shook up for a few minutes after watching that.

I find it funny how that level of gore is perfectly ok for a prime time cable TV show, but an F-bomb or boob shot would cause a furor

Should have checked out the Talking Dead after. They had the real live Noah sitting beside the gored-up life-like model they used for that scene, feeding them both strawberries. It was...disturbing lol.

Edit: And apparently according to a Yahoo article, the scene was supposed to be worse:
Quote:
And did they cut out much, or was it pretty much as you had filmed?

They had CGI’d some of it. They had done some blood splatter on the door, I guess, to kind of cover some of it, so that couldn’t see it all. The original pitch that Greg Nicotero had given me — where Noah’s eye would be poked out —wasn’t executed, which would’ve made it so much worse. But they kept a lot of it, which was cool.

I almost got the feeling that they've met before.

You would think that Morgan is going to show up again at a key point. They have been foreshadowing it at points this season. I just hope they don't kill him off too quickly.

Being a black man in this show is almost like wearing a red Star Trek uniform.
