Another thing that shows the huge difference between leaf fans and Flames fans is the amount of Iggy jerseys you see worn by Flames fans. I mean the fans are still wearing jerseys with their former captain's name on it while leaf fans can't wait to get rid of their current captain.

What the hell did Bozak do to get hit with 22 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct?

You mean your all-time points and goal leader? Not really a fair comparison.
Plus didn't some Flames fans want to run Dion out of town when he played for them? There are idiot fans, no matter the team or sport.
And anyways if you go to a Leafs game you will see plenty of Phaneuf jerseys, Sundin jerseys, Gilmour and Clark jerseys. You will see Bozak jerseys!

The point is that he's still their captain. I don't recall anyone making fun of Iggy like that, let alone by a Flames fan. Dion is still their captain and fans are making fun of him like that, I don't think he got close to that treatment when he was with the Flames by Flames fans. Idiot fans are everywhere but I guess because there are so many more leaf fans than any other team, there are more idiot leaf fans than there are for any other team. Not every leaf fan is an idiot, there just seems to be more of them around.

You also have to see it from a Leafs-fan's perspective. When Calgary had Dion was the team ever this BAD for so long?
It definitely isn't Phaneuf's fault but when a team has been this pathetic for this many years, the fans get frustrated and Phaneuf seems to be one of the guys some fans are picking on. Every situation is different...but if this exact scenario had played out in Calgary I'm sure the fan reaction would be the same.

The only other team to EVER be that bad for that long (or longer) is the oilers, and they don't really pick on one player. Their fans throw jerseys on the ice all the time. When an oiler fan throws a jersey on the ice, it's about the logo on the front, not about the name on the back lol.

That's true to some extent. I guess the Toronto media plays a big part too. Look at when Clarkson played here, even though all the fans hated him the media never went after him because he was a nice guy. So there is no news of fans holding up signs about Clarkson. But because the media people seem to dislike Phaneuf and Kessel (for personal reasons maybe) they focus on them, and this gets the fans to focus on them, and the media focuses on the fans and it's a cycle.
Anyways, as a hockey fan it gets kind of depressing when your hockey team is bad for so long and there still seems no hope for improvemnet in the coming years. Maybe Oiler fans don't get so angry because they still feel they have all their young guys who will eventually get it together. For Leaf fans we don't even have that.

The leafs are a better team than the oil and the leafs will become a better team before the oilers will. Hec, I think the current oiler kids will be in management before the oil become a good team. The leafs are garbage but I think they're moving in the right direction (compared to the oil)

Hard to fathom how bad the leafs are right now. Getting owned by Flames/Canucks and Oilers(!?!). Yikes. 1 win in the last 22 road games, or something like that.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

I don't think so. They will move out Dion and Phil, and go total rebuild in the summer. Could be historically bad next year.

1 road in in 2015. And today is St Patrick's Day. Let that sink in.
On another note, Jordan Eberle superstar? Rebuild complete? I think so.

But at least the guys running the show seem to...not be idiots. As long as the oilers keep former oilers in charge, the oil are gonna oil.

While the leafs are laughably bad, I don't see the current records for futility ever being broken. Never say never I guess, but it would take 'something special'
fewest wins (8) WSH 1975
fewest points (21) WSH 1975
most losses (71) SJS 1993
Yeah, probably not happening...

Was that '1 road win' a shoot-out win against a goaltender who could barely stand up due to injury? In a game where the only reason it went to a shootout is due to a different goaltender not being able to move laterally due to injury? You're giving them too much credit here.

It wasn't a shootout, but other than that, yes.

Can someone remind me why they fired Carlyle again? Sure the team played sloppy defense but they did at least score a lot of goals. Now they are a complete train wreck as they can't do anything right including putting pucks in the net. They look like a totally defeated group.
|
It was probably a rhetorical question, but it looks like they had planned to axe Carlyle all along and just needed a good reason to do so. The beginning of the end was probably the 4-1 loss to Carolina on December 18th. The Leafs were in 6th place in the Conference (19-10-3 record), had just won 10 of their previous 12 games, and were feeling good about themselves. Then they lose 4-1 to Carolina, and 6 of the next 8 after that, giving up 3.9 goals/G in the process.
Within a period of 16 days they dropped from 6th in the East to 8th and saw their playoff odds drop from 95% to 51%. They were probably hoping the coaching change would give them an emotional boost, enough to sustain a playoff position, but all it did was initiate the freefall. 2 Weeks after firing Carlyle they had further dropped to 10th in the Conference and were down to an 8% chance to make the playoffs.
