^those should work! I haven't ever gotten into fly tying. I've tried a few times and I'm terrible. Its definitely an art and I have approximately zero skill, so I'm stuck paying $2/fly basically.

Good job Angelamc! I can do nymphs but dry flies are harder.

Few shots from my trip down to Twin Bridges, Montana last year. Fished the Jeff and the Big Hole. I love Montana.

Any advice on how one would get started in this hobby? I assume take a beginner class at one of the fly shops in town.. recommendations?

Fly fishing has always been on my bucket list to get into, may as well start this year!

^ I would recommend going with someone who has some gear and can show you how to do things and get you going. I wouldn't go buy everything and then go from there because that is going to cost you a ton of money.

If you're inclined I know that Fish Tales runs beginners fly fishing lessons and could teach you all about fly fishing and how to cast and things like that. I would recommend them as they're a good shop in general (not particularly cheap however).

Flyfishing is casting, and knowing where to find the fish.

[Edit - an important part of casting is also knowing how to mend your line so you are getting a drag-free drift]

I agree with Slava - take a half-day or full-day course through a fly shop, learning how to cast.

After that, I would not spend a lot on expensive equipment. You don't need a fancy rod and reel, waders etc to catch trout in small streams. When it is warm, I just wear shorts and sandals. Don't let the flyshop try and sell you a bunch of expensive equipment. Trout don't know the difference.

Here are 10 tips that I mostly agree with. I would still caution you not to spend a fortune on gear even though one of the tips says get good gear. It does make things easier to a point, but its not a deal breaker.

If I was you, I would look to start on small creeks or streams, or even ponds. I wouldn't start on the Bow. In some smaller streams or rivers the fish are where they're supposed to be, which sounds kind of silly, but some big rivers will just be discouraging I think.

Last Summer, Lake Wabamun about 45 min. west of Edmonton. Unfortunately NOT on a fly, but not from a lack of trying with mouse pattern

We should have a CP fly fishing derby one day this summer really. That would be awesome and we could come up with a few small "prizes" and maybe donate some money to Trout Unlimited or something like that. Maybe not even a CP derby, just a derby in general would be awesome...

I frequent fish tales very often. As I type this I am in the airport about to go to Cuba for a week fly fishing. I will post pictures and maybe some video when I get home.

One thing if you don't want to by the gear and just want to see if it would be something you want to do is to go out on a float trip for a day or a walk and wade day with a guide. This will let you use their gear and their knowledge of the fishery to give you the best chance of a successful day.
Now a day is still going to run you about 500 bucks lunches included but they will also give you casting leasons and tips on how you are doing.

Think of it as a crash corse to help ramp the learning curve.

http://afgmag.com/bull-trout-portrait-of-a-predator/

This short video looks at the underwater world of bull trout in various life stages. It’s a short film that sets the feel of the bull trout environment well. As Blue Blood Films shares in their film introduction “Bull Trout are a long lived predator native to the Pacific Northwest, migrating from tiny tributaries to main stem sections throughout the changing seasons. Known for their aggressive nature by fishermen, underwater they are calm and confident. They are a truly fascinating predator.”

We’re fortunate to have a few good populations of bull trout through Alberta. While there are waters that are simply too cold and fragile to withstand much intrusion to habitat and angling pressure, our catch & release regulations are keeping fish in the waters. If all anglers would adhere to the regulations the populations would improve in those sensitive watersheds (such as the well known and fished tributaries to the Kakwa and Smoky Rivers).

Talk about an aggressive fish, I recall back in the early 70's fishing the Kakwa River at the Lower Falls. While pulling in a 16 inch bull trout, a 26 incher was trying to eat it. In those days we used a helicopter to get there. However, with all the oil industry activity since, the access is probably much easier. Thankfully, the catch and release regulations have saved the fish, as you could literally fish out a section of the river in short order.

^I've had bulls come after cutthroats that I had on the line and its pretty awesome. Probably not for the cutty though!

I fished the Bow for about 45 minutes yesterday and had a nice brown on the line. He got off and then when I touched the water and realised how cold it was I wasn't sure that I really wanted to catch fish!

I keep reading these reviews online about this rod and that rod being the best thing I’ve ever casted and all this bull crap. Every time I go in a different fly shop I ask them: “what is the best of the best you offer in your shop’s opinion?” I promise you almost every single time it has been a different answer. Each fly shop has certain rods that they favor and think are the best. There are also different bloggers and fly fishing contributors out there who will tell you that the Sage One, or Thomas and Thomas Solar, or Mystic Reaper blah, blah, blah are the best rods available. Again, that’s a bunch of bull crap.

There are only going to be a select few really good casters who are able to tell the most subtle differences in how a fly rod throws. These are the casters who, with little effort, can place a seventy foot cast, in 25 mph winds, into a spot about 5″x 5″with less than three false casts to a cruising permit. Then they can pick up and cast with their other arm just as well. These are the rod makers and a few of the folks that sell the rods. These are the guides who are casting fly rods two-hundred plus days out of the year. More than likely this is not you.

Anyone know where to get info about where and when they stock the local trout ponds?
