That would be one of the worst locations they could choose. No C-Train access and limited options for routes to get there from different parts of the city.

The stadium has to be on a C-Train line, no exceptions. It's the minimum of service they currently offer, they'll have to equal that or elevate the current level of service for inbound / outbound traffic.

Fair enough, but it raises the question whether there are any "world class" arena districts - or are the best areas that have arenas simply great neighborhoods with arenas, rather than being arena-driven?
Is there any city in the world where the best areas became the best because an arena was built?

Crow and Glenmore is a traffic nightmare at rush hour, but I think there are different plans for that area. Also, I would bet the neighbouring communities would have massive problems with such a development.

Good question. I don't know for a fact, but I think Seattle is a good example of a more prosperous/fun area growing out of the football/baseball stadium build. Pretty sure that was a run down area, and now is a great place.

The Arena district in Columbus used to be a State Prison. Now, it seems to be a nice gathering place.

What are the chances that the stadium and arena are not part of the same project? There seems to be a common thought that everything (arena, stadium, fieldhouse, restaurants, hotels, theatres) will be in the West Village. But is there enough room on those plots of land? I'm not so sure, particularly if they're floating around plans for office towers there as well.
Is it possible that the new stadium eventually takes over the land where the Saddledome sits today? Instantly by having a stadium there the potential dates of use more that double:
Ten days of use by using it for the Stampede Rodeo. Heck, I've heard rumours of them looking at extending Stampede. Model the use after how they use the Texans stadium for the Houston Rodeo. You can guarantee nice weather with a retractable roof, the seating layout would work better and get people closer than the grandstand does now. They would also have extra revenue streams with more club seats and boxes. Plus the stampede board has to be thinking that the current grandstand is nearing the end of it's own lifecycle.
Ten nights of use by using it for a series of big name Stampede concerts. Have one a night. On the flipside, if the Flames vacate the saddledome the Stampede board may lose their current concert capacity completely and that is a big revenue stream for them.
I'd suggest another 30 dates where the space could be used as extra exhibition space as an extension of the BMO centre.
All of the above would only really be possible at the Stampede location.
If built elsewhere we could still be looking at:
A potential MLS team would be at least 17 games.
If the stadium is designed correctly and they can find ways to attractively reduce capacity for certain events they could be looking at 10-20 concerts a year outside of during Stampede.
5 special events per year. Things like international soccer & rugby, heritage classics, grey cups, monster truck shows, queen/pope visits, UFC, WWE etc
& of course around 10-11 Stampeders games a year.
If they can get it on the Stampede grounds at land an MLS team it could be a 100 date a year stadium, which is pretty impressive.

I believe that land is zoned and slated to for some small commercial towers and office buildings. Some owned by the company next door to it.

I heard this is where ATCO's world headquarters is eventually going to go. That was a while ago, however.

After spending the weekend in Edmonton, and driving by the site, I came away a bit envious of the fact they're a lot closer to their shiny new toy.
Of interest was a radio ad I heard a few times on the drive home funded by local iron workers urging the public to lobby officials to contract local workers for the new Calgary arena. There was some controversy up north when they brought in "specialty" temporary foreign workers for some of the job.
"if they're using taxpayer money, they should have taxpayers building it". Of course nobody outside of the discussions between KK and NN knows the funding structure yet.
We're one day closer to finding out something I suppose. Right KK? Right?

No cowboy hats or boots.
I'm thinking stagecoach, saloon or wagon wheel that can be seen from space!

There is talk if the Vancouver plebiscite is successful in regards to city transit they may do one here on the same basis.
I wonder if Nenshi would do a plebiscite on funding for an arena?

Plebiscites are dumb. You elect officials for a reason.

Agreed total waste of dollars and resources. Doesn't surprise me that Vancouver does them though.

Yeah well in a lot of cases the elected official got his seat for being deemed less dumb than the other candidates. You only need to look at the leaders of the province to know that being elected does not equal competence or even confidence of voters.

So if you do not want a plebiscite does that forgo any right to complain if say there is massive city funding?
Edit: Or am I out to lunch in that a plebiscite is essentially a vote like a referendum?
