Default Firefly MMO - Keep Flying

QMx - Quantum Mechanix - A notoriously awesome nerdy merchandise company, has been working on a Firefly game for some time. Details can be found on the Keep Flying site.

What started out as a very simple concept for a Firefly based game has evolved. They recently teamed up with Steam, and the game will now be exposed to over 65 million users. The awareness is rising.

Though not a Kickstarter program, the project has apparently received several donations, ranging from appreciated to downright generous. A close friend of mine, who asked to remain anonymous, told me he had made a very generous donation in hopes the game would gain ground.

I didn't watch Firefly/Serenity until it came to Netflix, but I fell in love. I can't count the number of times I've watched the whole shebang. I love it. I did touch on this in the video game thread, but I think there are enough folk here that enjoy Firefly and might enjoy FFO. Plus, it will likely bring a bit more recognition and awareness. I'm excited.

Would be nice for it to be good, but I don't know of anything like this that has ever turned out, so I remain skeptical.

Some information has just been released regarding the travel system being implemented. Can be found here and I have to say it is starting to look very promising. Getting more excited for this game as time goes on.

Dude, you live in the armpit of BC! This isn't exactly a promising report!

I'm pretty excited for this game. It looks shiny!

Basically all they need to do is make it an MMO version of Freelancer with a Firefly skin. Add in surface based dungeons setup as Firefly style jobs and boom, you're done.

Lots of updates, as I haven't posted anything in a gorram year... I'll only touch on the important stuff.

The Cortex - Companion App
This handy little app let's you keep updated on all FFO news. The free version is pretty basic, but the paid version ($4.99 plus applicable taxes) allows you to make cargo runs on a fully interactive map of the 'Verse. You can also collect cards from various loot crates you earn. In both the free and paid version you earn Brownie Points or BP for reading news articles, or clicking the social media links, the latter of which is repeatable. In the paid version you earn BP for completing various runs, opening crates, or selling cards you earn from said crates. There is also a neat little "achievement" tracker for earning various badges and such.

To be honest I'm not much of a "pay for apps" kinda guy, but this one is worth it to me as my BP will transfer over to in game money and it gives me a bit of a head start. You also unlock the Kepler ship which can be used in game. If anyone gets those fanciful Loot Crates (the real ones that get mailed to you and you get actual real things) the February Crate had some FFO related merch, including a *non-unique* code to unlock Pilgrim, which was Captain Bret Hunter's ship from the Firefly fan short The 'Verse. I don't know if it would be wise to post it here, but if there is any interest there are most certainly a fair few ways of finding it.

Voice actors
Mal and his crew are returning to lend their voices to the cause. Chief among them is Nathan Fillion himself. Niska is returning as a pivotal villain as well. The characters you select have their own voice actors as well. Wil Wheaton has been selected as the male actor, and Courtenay Taylor has been selected as the female lead. Her voice acting career is long and distinguished, including Jack from the Mass Effect series, and Juhani from KotOR! Solid choice IMO.

All in all, the game appears to be playable on PC through Steam, or off the Apple/Play store for mobile/tablet. I'm not sure how that is going to affect things. Also of note, the game is due for release some time in Spring 2015, so the time is upon us.

Is anyone else as excited as I am, or am I fairly alone in this?

Cortex 2.10 is set to drop any day now. With 2.10 comes a whole new schwack of shiny features, including Series 2 card sets, and shipworks. Here's a little break down of the coming features.

Series 2 card sets-
The second series of cards not only allows players to collect a whole new set of cards, but it allows them to stack previously collected cards to gain bonuses and achievements. What about Series 1 you ask? Fear not, for every card crate will still release Series 1 cards, but the emphasis will be on series 2. So if you haven't finished Series 1 you won't be forced to buy card packs or endure the OCD torture of not completing the whole set.

Stacking series two cards will grant you access to a variety of bonuses and achievements. I don't know what they are as of yet, but I do know you can stack 1, 5, and 10 cards, so don't go too crazy selling all your duplicates.

Shipworks-
The ship works allows you to customise certain aspects of your ship, notably the paint job. You can select what colour you want to paint your bird, as well as how well used and faded, or how new and shiny, your ship is. You can also opt to purchase the Shipworks package from the Trading Post to gain access to even more options.

By the sounds of it, 2.10 is set to drop in the next week or so.

I l,ove the idea of this game.

I'm hoping that its a combination of the original Elite and Starflight (shows you how old I am)

Both gave you massive universes to explore and trade in.

With Starflight you could set down on worlds and gather tradible goods like minerals and animals to sell. If Firefly does the same thing but lets you commit robberies that would be great, or to go and meet the locals and get jobs from them even better. With Starflight you had your crew, and you could train them in their specific roles. You could modify your ship in terms of weapons and cargo spaces and engines.

With elite you got that first person in the cockpit flying by the seat of your pants experience, you could go and trade and modify your space ship in terms of engines and weapons. (My only problem is when I got the rapid fire military lasers and I was blasting people when they came on my radar.

I guess this game would be similar to Wing Commander Privateer.

All three of these games had story line missions but you didn't have to take them up, you could just wander the galaxy making money.

I would love a game where you don't have to follow a moral compass, where you don't have to be good or bad, you can just be.
