I don't even know what to say. Not even half way through spring training and already my optimism has turned to depression. I guess that's just the usual emotional transition of a Blue Jays fan, it's just happened a whole lot faster than usual this season.

What the hell kind of ####ty fields are they playing on at spring training that two players have already suffered knee injuries during the first two weeks.
Feel terrible for the kid, one of those guys that you could tell really cared and wanted it.
This iteration of the team is cursed.

Well looks like Dan Norris will be our fourth starter, and Estrada our fifth starter? At least its a knee for Stroman, he's still only 23, so he should come back as good as new....but still...

Still trying to processing this... the teams best pitcher... gone... while practicing bunt fielding.
I'd say this feels like a punch in the gut except that I imagine it's more like a shotgun blast to the genitals.
What little pitching depth they had obliterated in an instant. Gonna have to start Sanchez and Norris and pray to the baseball gods that the husk of Johan Santana works out.
This team is cursed.
Hope AA has his resume polished, 'cause if his job security is riding on this season then he's gonna need it.

Well damn... It does not pay to cheer for anything Toronto related.
Bunt drills was the cause for this? At the very least it's not arm troubles I guess.

Terrible news about Stroman.
Hard not to feel cursed as a Jays fan. My anger right now is pointed towards the ownership. It's absolutely inexcusable that our depth was not addressed in the offseason, and that our GM was not afforded the flexibility to add to this team. We had a roster with pretty big holes in it for a so-called contender, and now there is a gaping hole at the top of our rotation.
The worst part is AA will be the one to wear this when they don't make the playoffs too. What a colossal failure of an organization right now.

Losing 20% off the CDN $$ is about a 25 million shift is salary spending. That would have addressed those holes nicely....

^ except sports teams currency hedge, no? I put the blame on all levels of upper management, from the owners all the way down to Anthopolous. Anthopolous lets this happen by never putting pressure on management. There are times you don't half-ass it, and this is one of those times. Are any other pitchers holding out right now? I say go out and sign a 3rd starter or better. The season can't be lost before it begins. What an awful feeling right before the season starts.

Yes, and IIRC the Jays and Rogers as a whole did. Really any Canadian company that has significant costs in US dollars that doesn't hedge against currency fluctuation ought to be firing it's CFO.

“I watch him all the time,” added Sanchez. “This dude works, day in and day out, harder than anyone . . . to get cut short (after) the season he had last year as a starter, he’s a huge part of this team. I think we are all finding it hard. I’m taking it harder. You all know the relationship we have.
“I’ve got to make sure he’s fine mentally. He takes a lot of pride in what he does. It’s tough for him. It’s tough for me. It’s tough for this team. I felt he was in for such a huge season. It’s such a disappointment.”

Stroman has been a breath of fresh air in the clubhouse ever since he arrived in the majors to stay last June. His vibrant personality and infectious smile has a way of lifting the mood, no matter what the circumstances. Just last week he was talking about how much more at home and comfortable he feels this year as a player not looking to win a job, but just to get ready for the season.

Big loss in the room, too. Huge sigh.

How on earth do you know he hasn't? I'm always baffled by the number of times fans presume to know what conversations and disputes take place behind the closed doors of their teams.

It's been about 24 hours since news broke... I'm still crushed. I just can't convince myself that this isn't as bad as I thought it was the second I heard the news. I could do it for Saunders but not for Stro.

Easy there. I don't. What I do know is he's for the most part been an apologist for the owners to the public in the past. We've heard him say they're the 6th or 7th in the league payroll-wise, and that money has never been an issue, and to most of us, it clearly is when you're in the toughest division in baseball. Other GM's have put more public pressure on their ownership. Some may argue that doing so it biting the hand that feeds, which may be true, but also it's not calling the public stupid for realizing ownership needs to step up a bit more. Even when his buddy Beaston was being thrown under the bus AA stayed silent. At least give a statement that he's your friend and you don't agree with it. He just stayed silent. I actually like AA's smarts a lot (just check my past position on him), but one aspect I wish he would improve on is being honest about ownerships budget and whatnot.
