The house cleaning is finally on the horizon for the Sharks. I have a feeling McLellan won't be unemployed more than a month and even Wilson should find work quickly as they did really good work. They didn't win a cup but they were a top team for a decade and that counts for something in a salary cap era. A really good team and organization that has just run it's course and I don't think that's a slight to either guy. I really hope these guys both don't pick up the phone when the Oilers come calling.
Everyone said the same about Shero and Bylsma but where are those two now. You can give SJ this: They employ some really good scouts. Not sure about the rest of the operation though.

Shero and Blysma had Crosby and Malkin fall into their laps and failed to surround them with the talent to win more than one cup as they are a team that has started to slowly decline. Wilson built that team including the scouting staff so if you are going to trash GM's for poor drafting like we trash the Oilers then yes you have to praise GM's for assembling good scouts and making the right decisions and lets not forget GM's have a lot of say in picks made in early rounds. He also made the steal of a trade to get Thornton in the first place. He's a far better GM than Shero. Far better.
If San Jose Sharks does not make the playoff or not even win a playoff round someone has to give. It is either GM Doug Wilson getting fired or Joe Thornton getting traded or even both. Captaincy in that team is a fiasco. Marleau got stripped off captaincy a few years ago then Joe Thornton after last season. For the team with so many talents, i cannot believe they haven't win even the Conference Final yet.

IMO SJ needs Thornton more than he needs the Sharks.
Everyone on that team must be frustrated, including Wilson. But many teams would take Jumbo. Perhaps at a reduced salary. But you have to think that Wilson is fighting for his job. Seems to me, calling out Thornton is a way of trying to put the target on Jumbo's back and not taking responsibility for some of the suspect moves Wilson has made.
Joe is the leader on that team. If he has called so.e guys out, good for him. Someone needs to.
If the Flames weren't so stacked at C, I wouldn't mind to see Jumbo mentor the kids during the last few years of his career while giving himself a legitimate chance to win a Stanley Cup, unlike in SJ <--- Felt really good to say that last part

Yeah, I could live with it:
1) Sharks retain 45%
2) We send them Matt Stajan
3) ???
4) Profit

Feels like it could tear the team apart from the inside...but also feels like it could piss off some of the vets in that locker room and could get them to go out and prove that their GM is an idiot.
Wilson was handed great goaltending by Lombardi, and subsequently figured out how to piss it away.
He's a good GM, he had really good scouting lead by Tim Burke, and was very good at letting the scouts guide him to make good picks in the draft. But on ice, he just can't make the moves to put that team over the top.
I would be interested to see the Sharks analytic stats over the years. I would guess that they have been pretty dominant for a lot of years. Yet what do they have to show for it? They are like the Corsi Kings....built to dominate the numbers, but lacked the heart and passion to ultimately pull off the wins required to be champions.

Agreed. There is zero in season down side at this point for Joe and the GM to be fighting. Worst case, it changes nothing, best case the team rallies around Thornton and it gives them a boost.
The Sharks would be crazy to get rid of Doug Wilson. He's kept that team good for years, and managed to quietly retool without giving up major pieces. He should be allowed a chance to build around a new core - the only question is why he hasn't done so yet.
It's not right that he effectively slams Thornton in public, but Thornton just sealed his fate with the comments. Joe Thornton will be traded in the summer, and after Wilson couldn't find an offer he liked, because everyone knew how desperate DW was to trade him, what will they be like this summer? Some team is going to get a nice piece for $.50 on the dollar.
Wilson made this mess. Extended both Thorton and Marleau (with NTC). Sharks lose to the eventual champs in a painful manner (but still the eventual champs), rumours of big changes, nothing much happens, strips the C. It is such a gong show.
To me, they could have kept quiet, improved their goaltending and they would be right back in the mix.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Thornton will not be traded in the summer because he does not want to leave SJ. It doesn't matter what Wilson wants.
