IIRC his grandfather is Scottish. As to Johnny Oduya his ancestry is Nigerian.

The one that gets me is Sean Bergenheim. Could a name be less Finnish?

As others have said, it makes a lot of sense that he is just here to help out in practice. With Brodie, Russell and Wideman all taking maintenance days at the same time, it's tough to run drills without actual defensemen to take part.

Yeah, it sounds kind of an Irish first name and German last name. I have a good friend with the last name Rinne who was born in Germany and swears it's a German name too.

Although Germans have little communities almost everywhere in Europe.

Rinne is a very basic Finnish name meaning 'slope' or 'hillside'. Must be a coincidence.

If it's a neck thing and not a brain thing, it is likely it was the hit BEFORE the Depres hit that did the damage, the despres hit likely just made it so they shut him down rather than attempting to play through it.

He missed some games prior to that game in Pittsburgh after a big time hit.

Rinne is the German word for "trench" ... never heard a German person with that name Bergenheim would losely translate to "home of hills".

busy day at work, so apologies for a question likely already talked to in this thread.

Why exactly can he play during the season but not allowed to during the playoffs?

Murray is a big tough body with experience. He seems motivated to prove he can still be relevant in the NHL. His biggest challenge will be his skating ability and foot speed. But as a no cost insurance policy, if he can prove he can still police the blue line - then maybe he can even help us eek out a couple more W's down the stretch. It is likely worth a look.

This probably also has to do with the fact the Flames only have 2 more recalls available to them.

Better to get a free player than use one up in case of emergency.

You don't want to be caught at the end of the year with not enough players to ice a team.

People can be so unforgiving with things like that, ask Darryl.

Don't mind the signing. Has experience and can probably help in the room. Anything to get Diaz off the ice.

Those are the rules in the CBA. I believe it's to prevent teams from loading up on players from Europe just prior to the playoffs.

IIRC, the Oilers did that a couple of times back in the 80s to bolster themselves for the playoffs.

Why didn't he stick in the DEL?

That is what worries me? Since 11/12 he hasn't been able to stick anywhere.......What if he helps us eek out a few extra L's.

It was my understanding their season was done and the team he was on didn't make the playoffs.

I doubt he even sees anything other than practice ice until Hartley is sure he can contribute in a positive way.

"Eke".

He was suspended for 4 games for elbowing a couple weeks ago, so he missed the rest of the regular season and Cologne missed the playoffs

They know that. That's why they don't want to waste his development time by having him come to Calgary to participate in practices and sit in the press box during games.

That doesn't help the NHL Flames, that doesn't help the AHL Flames, and that doesn't help Wotherspoon's development.

Let Potter and Murray fill that role.

I'm guessing we had scouts watching in Germany and they liked his play enough to give this a shot. If he wasn't good enough for the DEL this wouldn't be happening
