I would guess that he could come without waivers if his German league team's season is over. Not entirely sure though.

I like it. There really is no down side to this, if he's bad he won't play and if management and the coaching staff think he's an improvement on someone then he will play. It's not like they said that Murray is replacing Brodie or something. This team has done so many smart things this year, there's no reason to start doubting them now.

I remember watching him about 4 or 5 years ago (can't remember exactly) when he was with San Jose. He was huge, but was TERRIBLE. Think Derian Hatcher with a piano, a VW, and an anvil tied around his ass.
Probably my least favorite dman I've ever seen in the NHL.

Murray an insurance policy. He would not be eligible for playoffs. #Flames
Derek Wills @Fan960Wills
Defenceman Doug Murray joins #Flames on try-out. He can play in the regular season but not in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Murray on the ice right now wearing 27. #Flames

So what is the point of this.......surely bringing up a farmhand is a better option.

I think the deal makes sense. You got Smid & Gio out, Wideman, Brodie, Russell & Engelland doing huge minutes.
If you can bring him in and have him reduce some minutes of the top guys before playoffs, then it is a home run signing. If not, you didn't lose anything in the process.

It could also be them lining something up early with next season in mind. Maybe they scouted him in Germany and liked what they saw and wanted to get the jump on signing him for next season. He isn't that old and was a pretty good player at one time.
I am curious as to whether his agent has a connection to other players on the team and maybe there is more business than hockey going on with this decision.

Is it odd? We have a very key injury on defence with Gio, Smid is out, and no guarantee there won't be others. We don't have great depth on the back end either. As you said, just a try out, but if he's able to prove he's a better option than Shlomo, Potter, maybe even Diaz (doubt it) why not bring him on board.

I believe in the Jays.
|
Why? I'd rather play everyone we have on the current roster (and a couple guys on the farm) before I'd play Doug Murray.

Yeah... but that "at one time" was 5 years ago.

As an insurance policy to help us get to the playoffs in the first place I guess. A farm hand would only be a better option if they are an upgrade. Plus I would rather someone like Wotherspoon to keep playing and try to push Adirondack into the playoffs than eat popcorn in the press box.

Do we even have a healthy body to sit in the press box right now on defence. Maybe they see it as an option to ensure that should a last minute injury occur, that we couldn't call up from GF on time to cover, that we have someone in the building we could slot in?

Odd in the sense that his last run in the NHL was poor and he couldn't keep up and he's been out of the league for a while now. Just a name that I didn't expect to see again.

If there's one thing the Flames have proven this year, it's that everyone else's cast off D-men are our hidden gems

Need to still make the playoffs, and have tones of injuries on the back end. Our playoffs have already started, need to make sure we can get through the next 15 games.
We can worry about the playoffs when / if we get there.
