Corsi reminds me of PER in the NBA. Is it helpful? Yes. Does it mean everything? Hell no. if so than Chris Paul is a better point guard than Magic Johnson.

He'll end up being called Benns or Benny (or, perhaps, Bennsy).

No, actually, Corsi reminds me of raw rebounding in the NBA. Some teams lead the league in it but it doesn't make them the best team overall. It's certainly not a bad thing though, because as Sam Mitchell would say, MO SHATS.
PER is a more wierd stat that no one really takes seriously. The advanced stats in the NBA that actually matter are stuff like TS%, Drtg, and Rebound Rate. Which are similar to any stats in the NHL that the experts associate with "luck".

how does advanced stats work anyways?
the Flames are 5th in the league in most PP opportunities and 1st in league in least times shorthanded.
It also seems to me that the Flames never ice the puck, their forwards are amazing at tipping the long pass into the opposing zone.
Do those count for anything?

You'd be horribly incorrect on that.

Last 3 games against the Ducks have all finished 6-3 one way or the other. What a bizarre coincidence.

Fighting is underrated. I love fights and so do the boys.
Makes my skin crawl when loser analysts like Cox talk about how it's useless, etc, etc.
Engelland's fight first of all gave Engelland confidence. It gave the team a boost. And it ALWAYS rallies the boys.
Just like we reached a peak with the anti-clutching and grabbing in 2010-2011, and that has subsided, I hope this season is the peak of lack of fighting and we'll see a comeback next year.
Surely coaches and GMs see the value in a good ol boy dropping the mitts.

Well, they have sustained it for 67 games..... and hopefully by the time our luck does run out, it is in October of next year, when we have Bennett, a year older Gaudreau and Monahan, and Brodie, and a healed up Gio.
And that's the best part of this whole troll job. We are 1-2 seasons from being a top level threat, and they pull this stunt this year, and basically raise the middle finger to all the geeks smashing at their keyboards frothing at the mouth that we don't fit a statistical model. By the time we come down to earth, it will be too late for them to say I told you so. Because then, they are just going to be an incredibly fast and talented team.
That.... or they already are a damn good hockey team, with an amazing amount of desire, chemistry. When advanced stats can measure those elements, I'll give them a chance. But they never will be able to, so I won't.
|
Hudler, Giordano, Wideman, Russell, Monahan, Brodie, Russell, Bouma and even Backlund are all on career seasons. A guy like Jooris comes out of nowhere to chip in 11 goals and nobody expected Gaudreau to chip in 50 in his rookie year. Don't kid yourself on how much of an accident of timing this all is.
So while you froth at the mouth about stats guys frothing at the mouth, just remember that you are the opposite side of the same coin.
Of course, if we do qualify but lose in the first round, I expect several of the people you are so upset about will move the goalposts and say that justifies their position (which they did re: Colorado last year). So if that should come to pass, then by all means, go be the attack dog.

Anyway, we saw what I think is a prime example of what defines this team this year late last night. Matt Stajan, on two goals, leads a two on one in which the only thought going through his head was how to get the puck to Gaudreau for a chance at his own hat trick. One of the things that will always be impossible to quantify is a willingness to sacrifice for each other.

There has been plenty of exciting Flames home games we have been at this season, but last was the best.
Down 2-0 after 3 min into the game.
The fight, the Stajan goals the Johnny goals. Monahan, Huddler.
All 4 lines clicking, all 3 pairs of D clicking and the pure fact they kicked the Ducks ass for probably 50 min out of 60 was incredible to see.
The Ducks in the standings are top of the league and outsize the Flames but last night it didn't matter to the boys in Red.
Hartley has this team playing for their fallen Captain there is no doubt about it.
Seeing Johnny hit the 50 pt mark was pretty cool too.

Actually, going by NHLE = 0.41, his college season last year implies he should have 67 this season over 82. He's on pace for 61 so he hasn't had puck luck (well, mostly just the first five games. Since then he's on pace for....67 over 82)

My favourite part of watching the entire game last night was when the camera focused on Hartley and he does his ever so calm and collected head bob as if he's thinking "stick that in your pipe and smoke it Bruce".
Then the camera would move to the Ducks bench and Bruce looked like he was going to explode. I couldn't get enough of those camera shots...lol.

We traded twice with St. Louis that season. Combined, we got:
Kris Russell @ 2.6m until 2016
Emile Poirier
Mark Cundari (who's been very good for Adirondack btw)
Hunter Smith
and they got
Jay Bouwmeester @ 5.4m until 2019
Jaedon Descheneau
