I like the idea of a retractable roof, so we might see some other live events in winter. However, it doesn't make sense that it is a massive barn like those in the US. Are there any examples of a 35k capacity stadium with a retractable?

Ideally, if it's a retractable roof, it should model after AT&T Stadium where outside views and lighting is embraced still so it doesn't matter if the roof is open or not. Otherwise it should follow Minnesota Vikings new stadium model, where the roof has glass elements and give you a connection to the outside world. The standard has been established now that indoor facilities shouldn't make you feel like you're in a concrete box like an arena.

Is there a reason that they don't? Except for stubbornly holding onto tradition? I suppose that an argument could be made for avoiding the NHL playoffs on TV, but even then, you could still kickoff a couple of weeks earlier and have no conflicts.

This.

I am a very, very casual football fan. Basically I'll go if I get tickets or whatever, but the last few times I've gone I'm usually leaving by half-time because I'm not going to freeze my ass off for a sport/game that I barely care about.

I'm much happier watching at a buddy's house or with friends at a pub.

I think people are mistaken that they lose the 10K casual fans to the cold weather.

You gained them in the summer because they could sit outside on a nice night.

There is 0% chance I would attend a Stamps game in an indoor stadium on a 25 degree August evening.

If it's outdoors, that sounds like a great time. I think I'm not alone on this front.

its about more than football though, if they are building a large stadium its about the big concerts/events

CFL is what 10 games a year if they are lucky

Right. Nobody is building a stadium that expensive for 10 dates a year.

This stadium is going to be built for the following:

- CFL football
- World Cup 2026 bid
- MLS bid
- Olympic bid for opening/closing/medal ceremonies
- Concerts
- Monster truck rally's
- Festivals
- Boat shows, exhibits
- High school football finals

Anything else they can pack in there to make it viable

BC Place has 2 concerts scheduled between now and November, and maybe 2 conventions. Besides that, it's all MLS, CFL, and some Women's world cup.

https://www.bcplacestadium.com/index.php/calendar.html

That is for a city twice the size. Whatever the new arena is will host the bulk of concerts.

You want to build the thing to attract CFL and soccer crowds if you want to make money.

If they get a new stadium with 30k seating I think you see that group move to create a country music festival that coincides with the final weekend of stampede.

If we can steal one or two shows per year from commonwealth, then it's worth it.

New Stadium will at the very least, be expandable to 40,000 capacity. That is the minimum requirement for Grey Cups, and World Cup Soccer (if that ever happens in Canada).

That would be interesting since two weekends are already blacked out for Stampeder home games during the Stampede. That would make it three consecutive weekends of blackouts.

There are a minimum of 10 Stampeder home games a year.

Interestingly, this season the Stampeder play 8 of their 10 home games by mid September.

Just speculation. But it makes sense as a long term goal. Probably something that's at least 5 to 15 years out I would guess. The Flames could never get a team without the facility being in place though, so I'm sure it's something they've at least considered.
