Okay, the western games of major importance have been talked about plenty. That Pavlec screw up, wow, the Jets may crash land after that. He did play really well after Hutchison was pulled but, his teammates must be dejected right now. In the eastern conf, it's nuts for a different reason. The top 4 teams are within 2 points of each other. The Bolts win a thriller, 1-0 in OT. Bishop gets the 19 save SHUTOUT while Price was the reason it went to OT. He faced 36 shots in the loss. The Rangers win 2-1 in reg time over their enemy rivals on Long Island. Great atmosphere on the island. The Bruins have woken up with a 5-0-1 record in their past 6 games. They beat the Senators with a 3-1 win and Sens are ticked that the burglar wasn't in net. Boston is now just 4 points back of the Capitals for 7th place in the east. The Stars beat the Flyers 2-1 in reg time, too little too late as Dallas is 7 points back of the Flames and Kings.

Just woke up and checked the OOT. Yup, the hockey gods officially hate the Calgary Flames. At least Winnipeg lost.

^You were expecting Minnesota to lose to Jersey and the Kings to lose to the Avalanche? You're asking a lot. I'd say the hockey gods intervened in the Flames favour on that Jackman goal... although it was Pavelec, so.

I've kinda accepted the fact that as a Canucks fan, I'm met with vitriol pretty much most of the times I post here. It is a bit ridiculous that other teams fans get lambasted so often around here though. Are the Jets even rivals with the Flames really?

Not normally, but right now, yes. We're fighting for playoff spots. There's also a bit of history with a certain Jets fan that plays into it.

It does strike me as odd that the stated policy is "all fanbases welcome as long as they obey the rules", when I read the last few pages and see the kind of xenophobia that's exhibited. It's a Flames board, but let's be honest, it's basically "everyone welcome as long as they obey the rules and are willing to turn the other cheek when flamed", which applies equally to me and probably anyone else posting analytics-based stuff.

You post a playoff chance chart based on analytics, then spend a few posts defending the chart because there's no context to the chart.

What I would like to see are what your thoughts as to why the flames are listed so low in the analytics and why they are able to still win, and with a decent goal differential?

A couple of people asked reasonable questions about the chart and I attempted to answer them. From my perspective those people who are honestly curious are the minority - most responses have had the pitchforks at the ready and the next question seemed like it would be "what is your affiliation with the Communist party". So my post up there is a bit over the top owing to some exasperation. But I think the solution is to ignore posts that seem to have a tone that doesn't express honest inquiry or the desire to discuss, rather than dismiss or discredit. Just don't have the patience.

For now, I'm more interested in predicting what I think will happen for the remainder of the season and the playoffs - most of this backwards-looking analysis tends to happen after the season. I think that much of the success has come from high-end finishing - shooting percentage is tied for fifth in the league (for which there are several possible explanations), while goaltending has never dropped much below league average. The Flames are a top 10 team in terms of time on the PP, and dead last in time shorthanded, while allowing shots against at a top 5 rate shorthanded, so special teams delta plays into it as well. This is less an explanation than an initial "here are a few of the things that are worth looking into when we try to figure out what made the Flames successful this year". I suspect some of it will simply not be easily explicable by the available numbers.
