Honestly, I'd rather stick with Jankowski. The comp for Jankowski would be the 53rd overall pick in the 2017 draft, I think most 2nd rounders in that vacinity are guys that you'd honestly evaluate as third line potential so I'll opt for the choice (Jankowski) that's further along in development.

Incidentially, if anyone feels like doubling down on Jankowski's his little bro is 2015 eligible.

Keep in mind that the Flames have a deep pool of forward prospects in Jankowski's age range and potential. He will take up a contract spot and likely be far down the AHL depth list. The draft pick becomes more appealing when you take these things into consideration.

The Flames need to evaluate the chance of Jankowski becoming anything more than a 3rd liner and go from there.

Why ditch a good prospect who is nearly ready to go pro in favour of a 2nd round draft pick, which would inevitably yield a prospect a couple of years further away from playing? It's a ridiculous argument and I'm glad we won't see that happen.
Agree. As has been mentioned before, he's younger than almost everyone in his draft year (for whatever that's worth). While he may not be the prospect that Feaster optimistically predicted, he's not chopped liver.
We've had other first rounders that were slow developers - Eric Nystrom was a higher 1st round pick (10th) that didn't produce at a point per game in NCAA, but he's turned into a pretty decent NHL player.

YMMV but for me it doesn't.

For me it boils down to a simple question (with an answer that none of us are qualified to make)... what is the chance that Jankowski becomes a career NHL player (call that 200GP)? If the answer is a number greater then or equal to 25% (IIRC that's about the chance that you get a legitimate NHL guy in the 2nd round) you keep Jankowski.

-6 ft 2.
-185 lbs (Projects to be over 200 lbs as a pro).
-20 years old.
-Centre.
-Good skater.
-Good hands.
-Good defensively.
-Good in the dot.
-Good hockey IQ.
-Consistent improvement every year he's been in the system.

I'd definitely gamble on that prospect playing more than 200 games, without knowing anything else about him.

actually Jankowski is already around 200. There were reports ahead of the season that he was at 195 or so and he himself tweeted a picture a few months ago where he stated that he had reached 200 lbs. Also, he's taller than 6 ft 2 ... most sites have him at 6 ft 3, but I believe I've read somewhere that he's close to 6 ft 4 by now.

EDIT: here's the post with his teammate's tweet, saying he's hit 200 lbs. That was in August. http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showpost.php?p=4869069&postcount=1743

Perfect - so when this kid is done, he'll be 215-220.

Backlund's injury history is well documented, and Bennett plays a style that he might need to grow into. Having this kid as the ace in the hole 2nd/3rd line centre swingman is huge.

Obviously its to early to make a call, we have to let Janko finish college 1st and see how he progresses. That being said there's dozens of prospects selected in the 2nd the last couple years i'd take over him at the moment.

I think I have a scheme to get both though.
- Offer Jankowski a low-ball contract
- He declines, signs with Florida.
-Flames have deal worked out with Florida, few months after he signs we trade a 5th round pick for him.
-Fla gets free 5th, Cgy upgrades 5th to 2nd.

Obvs Jankowski and his agent would have to play their part as he could sign anywhere.

Now how do we get this idea to Treveling/ Conroy hahaha

If you look at the video of the kids in the press box in Boston, he doesn't appear to be much shorter than 6'5" tall Jon Gillies.

Hickey is listed as 6'2" and Gilmour is 5'11", so I'd say Jankowski's easily 6'3" or 6'4".

What sign has Jankowski shown that he's not a career NHL player?

People are just judging him based just on one thing and that's the idea that he's not putting up a PPG.

...Which is the silliest thing to panic over. Here we've got Josh Jooris on our NHL team looking like a stud with only half the tools Jankowski has and he was still a Freshman when he was Jankowski's age.

Detroit's 2nd line center Riley Sheahan (*going by minutes) at Jankowski's age put up almost identical stats in his 3rd college year and now he's a consistent contributor to a top team.

You don't need to a PPG in NCAA to be a successful NHLer. It's not the CHL. And there's no actual pressure on Jankowski to be anything other than a skilled 3rd LW or 4th line center though it would certainly be awesome if he's our #2LW that win take faceoffs for Bennett. But that said I'll go off on a limb and say he's still looking like a better or comparable prospect to Granlund or Bill Arnold, both of whom I think are NHLers. Man, I feel bad for Max Reinhart... every year a guy just comes in to push him further and further down when once he was our top center prospect after Backlund.

Those are 2 examples. Another poster said only 2 players drafted in the first or second round that failed to put up PPG made the show.
I DO think Jankowski will make the NHL, but think his career will be similar to say jamie Lundmark. If things go great he could be a bit better then Colborne.

These players were select in the 2nd round between 2011-2013:
Ty Rattie, Thomas Jurco, Boone Jenner, John Gibson,Brandon Saad, Brett Ritchie, Matthew Nieto, Kucherov, Damon Severson, De la Rose, Fucale, Petan not to mention another couple dozen prospects id take over Jankowski. Hell I'd take a lot of these guys over Colborne who Jankowski MIGHT turn into if things go great.

Why are we restricting ourselves to 1st/2nd rounders exactly? Although that claim is not true, unless you're talking about guys who didn't start college until they were older anyways. But just because, I went and looked up the list of NCAA NHLers and focused on 1st/2nd rounders. The following forwards all played in college, and all were under a PPG at age 20 or less:

1st Rounders:

Kevin Hayes
Ryan Kesler
Blake Wheeler
Kyle Palmieri
Riley Nash
Riley Sheahan
Eric Nystrom
Charlie Coyle

2nd Rounders
Justin Abdelkader
Mason Raymond
Jimmy Hayes
Tim Jackman

All these guys are NHLers. Maybe not a list of superstars, but not many 21st overalls are superstars anyways. It's certainly not a list of scrubs.

But limiting it to 1st/2nd rounders is an arbitrary criteria anyways. Just as Gaudreau was a 4th rounder plenty of guys have been later draft picks, not put up the best numbers at age 20, yet proceeded to find their game. David Jones was a 9th rounder and didn't hit PPG until he was 21 but ended up having a 27 goal season in the NHL.

Good post.
My point remains though. You found 11 guys over the last decade. Some of those guys i'd still take the 2 pick over.

We have enough 3rd line center prospects. Unless he progresses offensively significantly l take the 25% chance on the 2nd rounder. Especially since there's a chance we can get a true game changer with it. Jankowski doesn't have that potential IMO.

There were only about 50 1st/2nd rounders drafted who went NCAA in the first place, and of those about as many were sure-fire top pick guys like Toews.

I know stats aren't everything but last year he had 13 goals in 39 games. This year currently has 5 which ties him for 9th on the team.
How exactly is he progressing.

Last year he had 12 assists in 39 games this year he has 17 in 30. How's that not progress?

Hell, if he were simply keeping last year's goal scoring pace with this year's assist pace, he'd have 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points in 30 games. He probably just hasn't gotten lucky bounces.

But he Doesn't

Goals are usually a better indicator of a players play than assists.

I'm a fanduel junkie and when looking for players on hot streaks you ALWAYS take the guy scoring lots of goals recently over a guy racking up assists. That's not just me it's industry standard.

So Hoffman > Gaudreau? Camalleri > Tanguay? Perry > Thornton?

There's no single indicator of play. You look at everything someone brings and different players bring different things.

Before I get piled on here I ust want to say I'm rooting for the kid hard. I hope I;m wrong about him and if there was no 2nd round pick in play I'd probally be grasping for straws looking for the positives as well.

With that being said I believe strongly in asset management and hope the Flames make a well educated decision.

I just find it ironic that we traded Baertschi for a 2nd and it was received favorably, any mention of choosing the 2nd round compensation over Jankowski is looked down upon. (different situations I know, but still)
