since it says Funny Or Die in the lower right of that, I'd like to pass on my condolences to the author's loved ones.

Since I have never seen the original Ghostbusters, I have no strong feelings about this one way or the other!

You forgot book adaptations. It's also one of the biggest "genres". (Harry Potters, Twilights, Fifty Shades of Grey, Hunger Games...) And blockbusters have always been like that.
(Most of the films considered greatest all time are book adaptations too. And they still make serious book adaptations too, like Silver Linings Playbook.)
Original scripts are rarer now because the "midprice" films are essentially gone now. Studios stopped making them. That's why Lynch wants to do another Twin Peaks, because auteurs like him can't get financing anymore.
Then again most of the same material is now on TV, which many consider to be a superior format for serious storytelling anyway.

Dan Aykroyd determined to make conventional, all-Dan Aykroyd Ghostbusters 3
http://www.avclub.com/article/dan-ay...view:1:Default
Appearing on both SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show and Unmasked With Ron Bennington this week, Aykroyd shared some very similarly worded encouraging statements about Paul Feig’s reboot, twice declaring, “I’ve got three daughters, so I’m all for female empowerment.” He also acknowledged that the Ghostbusters franchise itself was, like a broken-down Ecto-1, in desperate need of “a new engine, new exhaust, new steering”—a statement Aykroyd felt comfortable making, because he also has cars.
But while he supports the idea of completely rebooting Ghostbusters into a “parallel reality,” where Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, and Leslie Jones are the first and only Ghostbusters who have ever existed, and he praised all those actors as “masters” of their craft, and he hailed Paul Feig’s “great, great script”—that, nevertheless, “we will work on and make better”—he’s also hopeful this much-needed overhaul will be just the thing to drag his old, broken-down Ghostbusters idea out of the scrap yard and slap a new coat of paint on it.
“Let’s get this one made and that will reinvigorate the franchise and then we’ll go on to maybe doing a more conventional third sequel as we were planning and another idea I have for it,” Aykroyd said, fairly certain that the only thing that was preventing that conventional third sequel in the first place was that people simply needed to be reminded of Ghostbusters’ existence.
Aykroyd admitted that Murray has “moved on,” and declared, “I don’t think we will ever work together again,”

Pretty sure Captain Crunch said his nightmare was if they cast Channing Tatum, Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill, looks like it is heading that way.

A have this feeling that Sony, et al. doesn't have a ####ing clue how to handle the Ghostbusters property, which is a shame because there's so much potential there.
But it's early. Hopefully I'm waaay off.

This is over a year old now, but lays out pretty distinctly which studios are in a good place with the state of their respective franchises, and which are Sony.
http://www.vulture.com/2013/12/break...by-studio.html
Sony having the rights to anything that isn't James Bond is pretty much a death knell for creativity.

Seems kinda... sexist. So on one side they decide to with an all-female cast. Yay equal rights and feminism and all that jazz. But then they decide to make an all male one too... for what? Just in case?
They made the choice to go with an all-female cast first. If it sucks, fine. But at least give a chance to stand on it's own before crapping on it with an alternate all-male version.

My thinking is that the female Ghostbusters crew will lead to other Ghostbusters crews across the nation, and thus, other movies will follow those crews.
Just what I would do if I had a studio telling me they needed at least 4 or 5 Ghostbuster movies.

Ehhhh... I'm leaning Groundhog Day. Can you imagine if someone tried to re-make that? BURN THE THEATRES.
Anyway, it seems to me that this decision was based on precisely this sentiment. "Look, we cannot do a standard reboot of Ghostbusters. That idea is doomed. It can't help but live in the shadow of its predecessor. We'll have to do it so differently that it can't even really be compared. Got it - all female cast". Almost an acknowledgement of said sacred cow status.

From what I read about this they want to combine it with a TV show (and then video games, merchandise etc..). Maybe they are trying to Marvel Universe the Ghostbusters?

So the basic breakdown is that the all-female show is in production, the all-male show is a strong likelihood, with Tatum attached, Ackroyd will have the pull to make a Ray/Winston old guy movie if the first two get made....
I can only assume that after that, because it is Sony, they will try to think outside of the box and put out an all African American version, and then Gay Ghostbusters. Is there anything really edgy that Sony is missing after these first five?
Hand held shaky cam found footage Ghostbusters?
Ghostbuster Kids?
That's about it. Seven movie franchise. Done.
