Fun fact from Elliott Friedman.

"The salary cap floor is at $51 million. The Maple Leafs are paying $51.5 million to players not in their lineup: Nathan Horton ($26 million), Mikhail Grabovski ($14.3 million), Tim Gleason ($5.3 million), Mike Komisarek ($2.3 million), C0lton Orr ($925,000), Matt Frattin ($800,000), Frazer McLaren ($700,000), Troy Bodie ($600,000), Carl Gunnarsson ($400,000), Daniel Winnik ($160,000). Coming off the books this offseason are: Komisarek, Orr, McLaren, Bodie and Winnik."

Mind you, that's $51.5 million over the life of the various contracts, not $51 million next year. The Leafs would be really hosed if that were the case.

Yeah, that was a little bit of sensationalism for effect, but he has a point.

A Leaf fan told me yesterday that the Leafs have said they are not going to be anywhere near to being a cap team next year. This makes that Horton trade a little less sensible.

It could also be the fact that teams with cap space and the ability to spend it (when they want to) have a huge advantage in trades. The leafs could be looking at that as well.

The cap space with ability to spend is a highly valuable asset.

I am actually gaining a fair bit of respect for Horacheck. He's benched Kessel, VanRemsdiek, and Bozak for a period or two. Now he's holding Kadri accountable.

I don't think they've had a coach willing to hold skill players accountable there.

I suspect it's because Horacheck knows he's done at the end of the year anyways, so he's going to do it how he wants, but good for him.

personally, i think Horacheck is useless.

this was not a good/great team at all, however, have the talent to be a middle of the pack, playoff bubble team. They have decent offensive pieces, an avg d, and decent goaltending on most nights. They had a great run of 10 wins in a row this season, and while leading the league in goals, were right there in 8th spot. Granted the team wasn't playing a corsi/stat friendly game, carlyle was keeping them relatively competitive. they fire the coach, and leave it to some inexperienced guys behind the bench, and the team completely unravels. All offense lost, the locker room seems completely lost, even more TO media scrutiny on the core of this team, which has proven they already can't handle the pressure playing/leading the team in this town.

i personally think the carlyle firing was idiotic by shanahan & co. i also love that they go out and get a guy to be the president who has zero team management experience whatsoever.

Does anything that Peter Horacheck matter, Beyond the fact that he is coaching a team with Kessel, Kadri and Phaneuf, three massive egos, the Leafs are going to go all in on a new coach this off season.

Horacheck is fired no matter what he does. If I was him, I'd show up for games in Howard Hughes pajamas and robes, break the smoking law by puffing on a pipe behind the bench and have long conversations with all of the girls around the bench area.

If a player asks me what they should do, I'd fire back "What do you think you should do, now get me a martini boy and go wash my benz"

that's exactly my point. Horacheck knows he is done at the end of the year. He could suck up to the stars and try to beg into a new gig by enabling star selfish behavior (called the "Eakins Method").

Instead he's going to be known as the guy who was prepared to hold star players accountable, consequences be damned. They aren't playing how he wants so he's going to play someone who is. They don't care enough to show up for a meeting, then beat it. I can respect that approach much more than a guy begging to stay in the show.

Alternate (conspiracy) theory: Toronto is looking for excuses to not play their best players.

I wonder if a single Flames player would dare to sleep in and miss a practice or meeting. They probably all have synchronized watches and Hartley probably sends them a mass text message every morning haha.

Kadri is such a disaster. I hate the way that arrogant ass talks. He thinks he's like some established vet because he plays in TO and people flock to him.

He slept in. Big whoop. He was honest and apologized for it. Fans need to realize NHL players are human beings too.

I think if a Flame player did it that the coaches would be picking up pieces of the player's carcass after the dressing room held him accountable.

I can't fault the kid...He made a mistake and let's face it; it's practice....with the leafs. That team is a complete train wreck and is turning into the oilers of the east.
