I was on the Lindholm train before that draft, admittedly. He'll still be a great player and I'd leaned toward wanting the more dynamic and exciting forward at the time (remember, the "F" word was being used in some of the comparisons. Forsberg), but Monahan has far exceeded my expectations in both seasons and I happily and excitedly wear a jersey with his name on the back.

There would be such a flurry of texts and phone calls to all my friends who are oilers fans of that happened. Finish 17th and get a 1% chafe at McDavid only to actually get him. That would be better than playoffs this year.

Watching a team with no shot at playoffs for a while year isn't

I could see teams like Edmonton and Buffalo demanding an investigation into the lottery if that happened... Accusing foul play. They would just not be able to comprehend how all their suffering would go unrewarded. Even though the suffering is self-inflicted by being terrible organizations and tanking for the sole purpose of getting McDavid. It would be the sweetest of justice for the hardest working team in hockey to get that pick.

However, the point is moot because the flames will make the playoffs and it's because of the steps that every player on this team has taken to be better and work harder. Perfect example is Monohan... It's incredibly rare for a player to improve every aspect of their game as well as he has. His ceiling is so hard to read cause he seems to keep getting better and better... Who knows how good he can be? I know people like to temper expectations but he reminds me more and more of toews. We are very lucky to have this kid as part of the core of this team.

if he's hit his peak this year - I think we can be happy with that. anything else is gravy.

If Monahan already peaked it wouldn't be the end of the world but I would definitely be disappointed. I'm not exactly sure where his ceiling is but for someone to show so much at such a young age and improve so much in just one season I just can't see this being it.

I put on the Fan 960 about half an hour ago and they started talking, and I realized I don't know much about how contracts and extensions work.

So in the next yearish when Monahan's ELC is up, how much do you see the Flames extending him and for how many years?

I'm assuming 6x6 like the Oilers would be a disaster.

Honestly I'm hoping for a long term contract. Really don't want him to sign a bridge deal and show us how much he's going to be worth in his prime.

Sign him for 8yrs 6-6.5 mill?

Sure there's risk involved but if we can lock down our #1C for ~6.25m than we'll be laughing for the next 8 years.

Difference between Monahan and the 6x6 Wonderkids is that Monahan worked for his spot and proved that he is the 1C for this team. I would have zero issue with a long term contract and I don't believe for a second it would affect his compete and effort.

We can't sign him to that type of deal until he's off his ELC.

You were referencing Bennett, right?

We could have two legit #1Cs in our organization for the next 10 years...

Hm, you make a good point. I was thinking 5 years but he's the kind of player that will continue to be very productive beyond the age of 26. Like I said, I don't know much about contracts.

He'll be 21 next year, and an 8 year contract takes him to 29.

I also think he's a future captain.

Lock him up.

I expect the Flames to offer him a bridge contract.

2 x $3.5 - $4M?

I was thinking bridge deals for Monny and Johnny. 3-4 years so they are RFA at the expiry of their deals then lock them up for 8. We control them for 11-12 years then rather than 8

Yzerman/Fedorov, Sakic/Forsberg, Bennett/Monahan...

Seems legit to me.
