Moral of the story? Why the hell would you use a mail.com email just because you can't get the username you want on gmail anymore? If you set up two factor authentication on Gmail, and have a strong password, it is pretty tough for someone to hack your email. Pretty dumb decisions made by the guy who got hacked.

He only used Mail.com for forwarding.
His gmail 2-factor WAS hacked. The hacker was able to cajole a csr to change a phone number to a phone the hacker controlled, then used the accessibility feature to have the authentication code dictated.
Seems that the hacker had a pretty good plan - it didn't take long.
