If the Flames do go on a playoff run one thing that I would like to see the city do would be to have a public area where they set up some screens and show the games. Some sort of Fan Zone type of thing. I think the Canucks Sid something like that during they finals appearance. Couple good places would be Olympic Plaza, Lougheed House, Central Memorial Park or even Prince's Island park.

Dynamics have changed. A new crop of 18-25 year olds, who were only 9-14 in 04. Also a population growth of probably 250k (guessing here), who the majority are transplants. Thoughts?

Why do you think that the 19-25 yr olds of today are any worse than those of 11 years ago?

I agree with this point. The population grew even moreso between 1989 and 2004, and the city has always been one with lots of transplants, so I'm not sure how one could expect too much difference. Of course the Red Mile should be watched carefully, should we be so fortunate to make it to the playoffs, but not starting off with a combative/tense situation....and that approach the police took in 04 contributed to it being so peaceful.

I hope a Calgary based artist steps up and creates a good Flames playoff rendition of a popular song, or even something original that can catch on, as it's tradition.

And I demand that Navras and Spitfire be brought back for the start of the games. Ultimate pump-up combo. What the #### are we even playing during intros nowadays? (I've usually barely missed warm ups this season). The music selections must be top notch for playoff hockey.

I tend to agree that there will never be another red mile. As mentioned the police were completely caught off guard and that will never happen again. They should think about potentially setting up a screen in Olympic plaza. It's not the red mile but it would probably be something the police would get behind.

Also yesterday I saw a city of transit bus scroll Go flames Go. That made me smile.

Because I am now 11 years older and like to scream at kids to get off my lawn.

I've been waiting for a thread like this to pop up to ask for a favour...

I had a hard drive crash a few years back and lost all my pictures. 2004 was our hay day... My friends and I taped my huge black camper van up in all the names of the players... And built and installed a 6' Stanley cup on the roof.

We played street hockey at the dome every game, and watched the games inside the van on my TV (when cbc was available over the air). It was the best..... But I have no photographs.

We attracted a lot of attention so I was wondering if anybody had a shot or two kicking around.

Thank you.

What's the story with Electric Avenue for those who are too young to remember? It's hard to imagine 11th Ave being a strip of 20 bars or something like that with the current look of the street with boxy offices, furniture stores, and a daycare.

It's unfortunate this city hasn't created an actual well-planned, controllable, entertainment district. Perhaps that's something the new arena could do. 17th is pretty sparsely laid out.

Maybe it was just the weather yesterday, but I saw a few more Flames hats/shirts/etc during the day then I typically recall seeing the last few years. Feels like things are starting to bubble under the surface a bit.

That's precisely what Electric Ave was thought. About 15 bars on either side of the street and all night Friday and Saturday it was full on party mode. I was a piss warm hotdog guy during the heyday of Electric Ave, and I still maintain the block would have continued running if not for the 300 person brawl in Three Cheers that brought 20 cops in, and one officer lost his gun in the melee.

The daycare centre used to be Coconut Joes, which was probably the most notorious of the bars on that strip. People either loved or hated Coconut Joes.

It always makes me laugh when I drive by there and see that little playground out front and think about how many children were conceived because their parents met grinding on the dance floor there (of course, it's been closed long enough that those kids probably have kids at that daycare).

Just bought another flag from Amazon, and going to dust off the old one. It's time.
