I think some people are confused on the depth of this draft.

I've heard the high end depth (picks 1-9 or so) are very good, especially relative to last year.

I haven't heard similar praise at all into the 2nd round.

It's widely considered a strong draft due to the strength of the top and the depth. No one is confused

Three - this year's crop of talent is not only special at the high end with McDavid and Eichel but expected to be deep throughout the first round and beyond.

After the top 18 or so it levels off allegedly all the way down into the third round. Not deep elite. But deep in quality after.

Seems a lot of conflicting information. Pronman says he's heard scouts say it's above average until 45 or so.

Insider Trading: Trades that almost happened at the deadline

http://www.tsn.ca/video/insider-trad...appen-1.224250

Blue Jackets were front runner for Clarkson
Leafs also offered Clarkson to the Devils. Believed Ryan Clowe would have come back.

Leafs got a lot of calls on Roman Polak
Blues tried to get him back to fill the 3rd pairing RHS, but price was way too high.
Blues got Bortuzzo instead

Calgary, Ottawa, Edmonton among the Canadian teams most interested in college FA Matt O'Connor
One team contact O'Connor's agent and asked if they moved a goalie out at the trade deadline, would it increase their chances of signing him right now - it obviously didn't
O'Connor is focused on BU and won't make any decisions on NHL till college season is over

Kings will evaluate Richards in the next couple of weeks on whether to recall him for the playoffs.

I'm guessing that team was Edmonton.

According to Garrioch the Flames were extremely close to acquiring Jan Hedja at the deadline but couldn't get it done in time

Everytime I see the name Garrioch I feel like screaming..he's a total dork hack who hasn't EVER broken a trade. It's beyond me why people even use his name in any discussion let alone trade rumors.

Can I please ask the question?

Why in a million years would the Flames be interested in an old soft Jan Hejda for $3.2 million.

Doesn't Hejda's contract expire after this season (cap hit would be irrelevant)? He can play big minutes - is he really any worse than the other options we have for our third pairing right now? I'm glad we didn't give up anything of value for him (probably would have been a 2nd or 3rd) but its understandable why the Flames would explore that option.

He did break the Jokinen re-signing with Calgary before anyone else in 2010

I think you're talking about Dean Macammond. That trade was before the deadline. But I think it had something to do with picking him up on waivers from the Avs and then trading for him within 12 months.

How about Beau Bennett?

- 23 years old
- Highly skilled
- RW
- Shoots right
- Good size

Because of his injuries, which seem to be a freak occurence, might be had for cheap.

If Richards is recalled doesn't he have to go through waivers and a team can take him for only 1/2 the salary?

They didn't pick him up off waivers from, they got him back from Colorado for a 5th round pick. The trade was right before the deadline IIRC.

It had something to do with the waiver draft in the fall. They could reacquire a guy they traded prior to the waiver draft for some reason. The rule was designed to keep teams from somehow circumventing the waiver draft.

The Flames obviously didn't do that there though and can't believe McAmmond had to sit out the remainder of the season.

No. Recall waivers were eliminated in the current CBA.

I really hope we can package some picks and move down in the draft. Our first and maybe a 2nd and 3rd to move up or maybe two 2nds and a 3rd to get another 1st. Packaging all three 2nd round picks could look tempting for some teams as well. A lot of options. Obviously this could be tough because scouts have a good idea of where the tiers of talent are but hopefully Treliving could make something happen. If not I'd still be more than ok having 6 prospects in the first 3 rounds. Some quantity for quality wouldn't hurt either though.

So, when can NHL trades begin to happen again, we've seen non-playoff teams make deals during the playoffs from time to time...
