I like to think if the Flames make the playoffs this year, the city will really get behind them.
For the Red Mile to really come alive they'll need to make it past the first round though.

IIRC, the Flames weren't getting much attention until that win against the Yotes put us in the playoffs.
The Red Mile built over that run, it wasn't instant the second we got to the post-season.

I lived in mission at the time and it really started to take off when we eliminated Vancouver.
I lived a few blocks off 17th and had a few friends over watching the game and as soon as it ended we just instinctually went to 17th where it was instantly beyond anything it had been up to that point. It really seemed to escalate from there.

The red mile of 2004 didn't really become big until the night of Gelinas' OT goal to eliminate the Red Wings.
A couple of other factors will work against a Red Mile repeat. I recall CPS making it very clear things were not going to be the same when the 2006 playoffs were beginning. Thanks to Vancouver fans, I think the police will be more vigilant and less tolerant. I also doubt women will be flashing their breasts when everyone is carrying a smartphone in 2015.

The red mile was one of the best times of my life. I lived in Kensington at the time and we would hop on the train down to 17th after every game. Also watched several games down there. Game 6 against Detroit we were at this dive called Points I believe? The bar had like a 20" TV but when that Gelinas goal went in and we got the streets it was a crazy night.
Being 20 years old at the time made it just awesome as well. I could get hammered drunk and go to work for 8am the next day and be fine. No way I could get away with that now being 31

Fewer flashings, but more pictures of those who do.

Nothing will ever re create 04. That being said if the Flames do well I can see some of the excitement coming back. But nothing will ever recreate the energy it took for me to leave Regina at midnight on Friday and party hard from 630 am Calgary time Saturday morning of Game 6 of the final until Sunday at 8 am. That was the best party and most memorable trip I have ever had. And they lost ! (even though Gelinas scored) I cannot even imagine what time I would've shut it down had they won. That was just the energy that was happening that May and June. It was magical and it cannot be recreated. Iggy deserved to hoist that cup .

I was 15, turned 16 during that run, so I missed the whole "get plastered and celebrate wins at the bar" part of it. But it was still a damn good time, and a thing that can't really be replicated.

I was away at school in 2004, so it was all about the team and the hockey. Great memories.
I can't wait for when the Flames are back in the playoffs -- anything can happen.
The funny thing is that between 86, 89, and 04, the Flames have either lost in the first round, or gone to the Finals. It's been all or nothing with this team (at least in my lifetime).

Wow this thread gives me the chills. I'll never forget riding up and down 17th the night they eliminated Van. What a feeling.

The City Police will never let it happen that way again. They will force people to remain on the sidewalks and minimize crowds. Too much concern about riots, public urinating, crowd control. Was there in 04 and it was a blast. But I don't think it is going to happen again.

It was the Spring of Grade 12 for me... I remember it got really crazy after we eliminated Vancouver.
Fun times. Probably won't see anything like that again for a long time.

Man, I was 12 in '04 so I was way too young to get in on any of the fun. My dad took me down to the Red Mile after game 3 against TB, it was crazy. I wasn't even 18 the last time they made the playoffs, so just watching Flames playoff games in a bar would be a blast for me!
