Default QOTD: Ice time on the blueline

More ice seems to equal better player. It's a phrase we've heard from many a player over the years, but I have to admit I didn't see it as a reality from Engellend. Didn't see it at all.

The given in the six is the Wideman/Russell pairing. That isn't going anywhere.

But who do you play with Brodie? Who plays in the bottom pairing?

Schlemko looked good last night, Engellend has been a revelation and Diaz has played better.

Hartley likes the right/left combinations now, but that hasn't been the case all season.

I appreciate Engelland's increased tenacity since Gio went down, but he's an icing machine and does little else well. I'm much more comfortable with him on the 3rd pairing.

Schlemko was surprisingly physical, and he can skate and handle the puck a thousand times better than Engelland, so it only makes sense to pair him with Brodie. He might need a couple more games to get acclimated to the team and system, but he has a much better skill set for a top 4 defender.

I want Brodie playing a lot more minutes than Engelland.

So what I would like to see is Brodie spending some time with each of Engelland and Schlemko, Wideman and Russell together, and Schlemgelland with Diaz for the remaining minutes.

I went with Diaz/Brodie, Schlemko/Engelland.

Diaz is an upgrade of Engelland and is less of a liability for Brodie to make up for. Schlemko can help carry that third pairing.

I thought Schlemko has played pretty well. I think he should be given every opportunity to be Brodie's main pairing partner. His skill set fits.

Rotate the other two with situational assignments.

While Engelland and Diaz's improved play is admirable, there is a ceiling on their ability.

Brodie is the best dman we have right now. He should be playing the most/toughest minutes.

I think we are going to see Schlemko's ice-time steadily increase as the coaches learn how to best utilize him and gain comfort with him.

I fully expect that fans will be pencilling him into 5th on the depth chart this summer, jumping ahead of Engelland, Smid and Diaz.

He is an NHL defenseman. And his style suits the Flames.

Plus, Diaz with Brodie on the powerplay.

I have to admit I am impressed with Engelland since Gio's injury. Playing smarter & grittier.

I think Engelland with Brodie is working fine and I wouldn't break up Wides & Russell.

Schlemz/Potter/Smid & Diaz to round out the bottom pair.

Wideman has been a beast the last 3 games.

That being said, i think this is the time to bring up Wotherspoon and let him have a go on the 3rd pairing.

Wonder if that second pairing would do well. I think it would.

Engelland is a detriment to Brodie because he can't make a first pass. When Engelland has the puck the other team knows it's going back to Brodie or it's going to be icing, so they take away the reverse which kills a lot of breakout attempts. Schlemko can make a first pass and is a much better skater than Engelland and will allow Brodie to be more active offensively.
