Yeah, their stats have been similar so far this season. But the difference in workload is critical .
As a back-up with limited starts, both this season and last Lack has sparkled and not represented a drop off from Vancouver's starter.
But when the workload ramped up for him in the second half of last season, after Luongo was traded, Lack fell apart. The five goals he let in against St. Louis and Buffalo since Miller's injury, suggest he's headed in that direction again.
A lot of it is mental. Lack's personality - goofy, supportive, team-first - is perfect for a back-up. But, it's not a starter's mentality.
As for Markstrom, he simply doesn't have the mental toughness to play in the NHL at all. After posting stellar numbers in the AHL this season, he let in three goals on his first four shots against the Sharks. The same thing happened with him on the Panthers. Put him on the NHL stage and he wilts.
Markstrom's flameout means more workload for Lack, which I suspect will translate into plummeting numbers.
For that reason, I think the Canucks are done.
