The group pushing for the moving up of the deadline were at the Sun & Salsa festival in Kensington yesterday handing out the e-mail addresses of the aldermen who were undecided or against.

Good for them.

Same here.

Not only is she voting against a proposal that I support, she has also not responded to my query. This is not a trend in a politician that I desire. Even if she disagrees, she should still eloquently say so. No response = no respect = no vote.

The sad thing is most people are far more apathetic that you or I. Most people vote for an alderman because the recognize the name, so it's common for the incumbant to win.

I was out there all afternoon but I didn't see them, must have distracted by all the women. I would have thanked them for their hard work.

The Herald reported an interesting compromise being contemplated that might get this through. One alderman was talking about the bars that built seperate smoking rooms be allowed until 2008, and all others to be non-smoking by 2007.

http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...fe530f&k=19159

Calgary could see its anti-smoking bylaw enacted early if an alderman can convince council colleagues today to accommodate businesses that already have special smoking rooms.

Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart has written an amendment that would allow bars which have built expensive, ventilated smoking rooms to continue to offer a smoking environment until 2008, while all others would have to go non-smoking by January 2007.

With at least three aldermen sitting on the fence on the issue, the six proponents of the motion are working hard to woo the two more supporters needed to win the vote that's expected today.

We are all talking about Laroque, aren't we?

She's a waste of a council seat, IMHO.

Here it is;

Smoking Bylaw To Take Centre Stage At Council Meeting
Jul, 23 2006 - 10:30 PM

CALGARY/AM770CHQR - Moving Calgary's smoking ban up by one year is sure to generate some red hot debate at city council Monday.
Alderman Diane Colley-Urqhart is expected to put forward a compromise motion that calls for the ban to be moved up by a year at all establishments EXCEPT those that have built separate smoking rooms.
Those establishments would be allowed to continue to operate the smoking rooms until 2008, while all other bars and restaurants would have to go smoke-free as of January 1st, 2007.

I just got back from the champ car race in Edmonton, and I have to admit that the only thing that dingehole has going for it is their smoking bylaw. It was nice coming back from the clubs and not reeking like stale smoke.

I wish Calgary would do this, there really is no reason why we shouldn't.

Sounds like it's done...

Butting out in 2007, with exception for those establishments who built "smoking-only" rooms.

As heard on QR77

Wanna bet there is a rush to build "smoking only" rooms?

Hopefully, there is something in there to make the definition of a smoking room reasonable.

That said - I can't wait to see it official.

QR77 has a story on their webpage link

hopefully there's a rule that says they must already have a smoking room in place in order for them to be able to keep smoking in their establishments until 2008.

Colley-Urquhart said there are about 100 bars and restaurants that built smoking rooms and she will ask the city to consult with these businesses over the next two months on a way to grandfather them into the smoking bylaw.

I cant think of one place that has done that. Though, Im sure come 2007 the 100 of them will be pretty popular and well known.

Just listening to QR77, the vote was 9-5 in favour of moving the date up to Jan 1, 2007, and 10-4 in favour of allowing establishments with smoke rooms to wait until Jan 1, 2008.

Denny's, the corner of McKnight & Edmonton Trail build an addition on. I know the Humpty's on 36th NE has a sign saying "Smoking Room".

All the BPs have their lounge separated - I wonder of those will qualify?
