Wideman is a known prankster and is a great locker room presence. He seems well liked by his teammates so I'm not surprised he got it.
It's just hard to predict these things when you've got so many role players on your team. There are more players worthy of a letter than not it seems.

All I know is we have the best looking 'A' in the league.

I like Wideman. Seems to be able to keep things loose and not be intimidated. Two qualities we're going to really need down the stretch here particularly with all the young guys in the lineup.

With Gio's absence the Alternates are now: Russell, Hudler, Wideman. Though no ranking shoudl be in order. They're likely ranked as I listed them.

It's Wideman. Hartley just announced it on the radio. Said that he had improved his game and contribution tremendously this season and that the Flames would not be in a position they are in now without him.

Good on Wideman for turning it around. It wasn't all that long ago that Flames management was trying to wipe their hands of the guy (and his contract, although I would suggest maturity was part of it).

It's awesome that this team is bursting at the seams with leadership both now and in the future. Giordano is such an awesome captain for this team and will continue to be that for a long time.
But even outside of him there is so much leadership and character on this team that tons of guys have the qualities to have an A on their sweater... Brodie, Russell, wideman, hudler, backlund, stajan, bouma, Monohan... Any of these guys could be assistant captains on this team and deserve it. Even looking further ahead... Everything thing we've heard about Bennett sounds like he will have all the great leadership qualities an NHL team would look for in a captain/assistant captain.
Only so many A's to give out and I think they've made great choices in Russell, wideman, and hudler. But it speaks volumes of this team's character that so many guys could be considered leaders on this team.

Not sure where you get that Flames management was trying to get rid of the guy. It is more like CP wanted him traded which I don't understand. Thank god CP is not the Flames GM; otherwise we would have lose Wideman, Hudler, Ramo and we would have Chris Stewart, Alexander Semin and Mike Richards by now.
I think it was a good choice to pick Wideman as one of the Assistant Captain. I admit the guy struggled early in the season but he's been one of the best players we have ever since he was reunited with Kris Russell.

I heard from more than one source close to the team that Wideman was on thin ice this summer. Sportak has a decent article in the Sun today discussing how he changed his offseason habits and tried to emulate guys like Giordano and Chara. Glad to see it pay off for the guy.
