This is the start of an epic 30 goals/season for the next 15 years.

Well maybe not like that, but I think he can and will do it this season. If he does hit 30 at the age of 20, can we start pencilling him in for 30 each season?

Every game his status as a #1C grows and grows. I was the first guy to bitch back at that draft about not falling further then #6, but I'm so glad we picked where we did.

What's awesome is that if you took current Sean Monahan (29 goal, 56 point pace) and kept him playing at this level through his prime, it could be considered a highly successful draft pick at #6.

But of course, Monahan is 20 years old. 20. In one season he's improved in every measurable category from scoring to faceoffs to possession and defensive reliability. I struggle to think of many centers who have been relied on so heavily at such a young age, while producing at such a rate. Most of them are #1 or #2 picks like Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Tavares. Guys like Bergeron and Kopitar can be used as very reasonable comparables, which is a pretty damn good sign for the future.

He just needs to get Iggy with it, and 30 is doable.

My guess is he ends up at 27 though.

To add to that, he now leads his draft class in goals and is 2nd in points, but he's slowly catching up to Mackinnon. Mackinnon I think has the higher offensive ceiling. But Monahan shows every game just how complete of a player he already is.

I expect 30+ goals.

Just as he excels in the last third of every game, he is going to blow the doors open in the last third of the season

I wouldn't say he's under appreciated.

The true Flames fans appreciate that we have a 20 year old scaring the crap out of some teams and going against the best centers on each team.

Monahan is under rated.

Like CroFlames said Monahan plays an amazing 200 foot game. His defense is just as good as his offence. Just becuase our #1 center isn't a scoring superstar doesn't mean he's a poor offensive player. Because of that Monahan is comparable to Patrice Bergeron in his early years. Bergeron has only peaked at 31 goals (2nd year NHL) but has an excellent defensive side to his game.
Also should be noted Bergeron's highest point total was 73 (2nd year NHL also), yet alot of people here will agree in saying Bergeron is a fantastic all round player.

And as of today..
Monahan 63 GP 22 G 21 A 43 pts
Bergeron 61 GP 19 G 26 A 44 pts

Points so far in their career:
Monahan - GP 138 G 44 A 33 p77

Other notable draftees from 2013:
MacKinnon - GP 145 G 37 A 63 p100
Droiun - GP 54 G 2 A 24 P26
Seth Jones - GP 142 G 12 A 35 p47
Elias Lindholm - GP 119 G 20 A 28 p48
Bo Horvat - GP 49 G 9 A 9 p 18
Valeri Nichushkin - GP 83 G 14 A 20 p34

After looking at this, I think I would still take Monahan in hindsight over Lindholm, Nihushkin, Horvat, Drouin, etc. I would consider taking MacKinnon but I love Sean and what he brings. I truly think he could be a captain in the future. Maybe not for another 10 seasons, but I could see him leading the way for many years.

Not that Bennett couldn't but I just see Monahan as that guy, cool headed, leads by example in the weight room and in the community but also on the ice.

Great job with this pick and I think he will reach the 30 goal mark this year. The most impressive stat this year is his faceoff abilities. He has improved that skill so much over the last year, it is incredible. Not long until he is one of the best in the league.

Wow that's scary close actually, the fact he is upping his overall production all while facing top competition night after night is awesome, exponential growth is never expected but always welcome, especially given what we've had for 1st overalls, let alone any draft pick, prior to Feaster.

Now we have many picks this year too to look forward to!

You have to go back to the 2011 draft to find a recently drafted player who has scored more goals than Monahan (Saad-49, Shaw-50, RNH-57, Landeskog-73). Even so, those players have played around 100 games more. His current goals per game is sitting at .32 in his sophomore year! A lot of the all stars are in the .36 to .40 range. While Stamkos is in the .5 range.

Imagine in a few years...

Gaudreau - Monahan - ???
?Ferland? - Bennett - Poirer

Which line do you send your top d-man against?

with his career average he should be good for 6 goals. 28 would be one higher then Taylor Hall's best season

Coincidentally, the first person to get drafted in the first NHL entry draft was also a centre named Monahan. Garry Monahan. One spot ahead of Pete Mahovlich.

Garry had a lackluster 0.16 goals per game in his career.

It'd be pretty awesome if Monahan was able to put up 30-30.

If Oiler fans weren't so apathetic nowadays, there would be mass suicides if this happened. Their golden boy being outshone by Calgary's

30 goals is doable. In fact, I feel for the Flames to make it into the playoffs, they need a couple of guys to get on goalscoring streaks. Maybe a patented Raymond hot streak coincides with Monahan heating up, now that they are playing together?

Not only that but he was drafted 6 years after Backlund and has already played half as many career NHL games as him (138 vs 279) and is only 4 career goals behind him!

Since someone above mentioned that Monahan only needs to get to 28 to best Taylor Hall's number of goals in a season, I checked out RNH's stats and he's never cracked 20. How? He looks well poised to accomplish it this year though.

This post made me go check the Oiler stats and I noticed Nail is a career -68. Yikes.

He can do it.
The Flames will need some clutch goals in the final stretch, especially with Giordano out. That's Monahan's bread and butter!
