Never want to see a player get injured, but I've been hoping to see a situation like this happen for a long time. It would have been hilarious to see the trainer come in and have to play goal. Props to Luongo for coming back though.

Many years ago I can vaguely recall Ed Whalen saying Kevin LaVallee could be pressed into action for the Flames as a Goalie during a game.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie2m2 minutes agoIf Luongo prognosis not good, FLA GM Dale Tallon may trade for goalie. Trades are permitted post-deadline but player not playoff eligible.

I didn't know this was allowed.
How bummed would the goalie be if they carried Florida to the playoffs, then weren't allowed to play?

One other thing to watch - will the Panthers push hard for Matt O'Connor now? College free agent would be a good plug into their lineup, and would be able to grow as Luongo's backup/potential successor?
I could see them making a trade for a real marginal guy, just so they can keep their minor league teams staffed, but they won't be grabbing anyone of note

They aren't going to throw a goalie with no pro experience into the fire and ride their playoff hopes on him.
Also very unlikely O'Connor leaves his team now in the middle of the Hockey East playoffs.
Teams to watch are Edmonton with Scrivens and Fasth or Toronto with Reimer.

Agree, unless they can't find a better option obviously.

Disagree. Dude would be on a plane ten minutes after being asked and no one could blame him. It's the show.

Nope, very rare occurrence for a college free agent to leave their teams before the season is done.
Tim Murray already has gone on radio and said that the Sabres are willing to play him in games this season if he signs.
He reportedly has 14 teams willing to give him NHL contracts.
He has his shot to the big show right now but he is committed to his teammates.

He was mistaken.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
I stand corrected on trading after the deadline. It has to be a free agent signing, not a trade. My mistake.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Lots of confusion on this one but bottom line is any player can be traded after deadline but not eligible to play in reg season or playoffs.

A few years ago I went to see the Flames play the Panthers in Florida, and after the game met Rob Tallas during a postgame drink in a nearby bar. Really nice guy who was happy to chat hockey with a drunkard like me for about a half hour or so. Glad to hear he suited up!

Ok that makes more sense. I kind of recall something like this happening to the Flames with Dean Mcammond a while back. He was acquired post-deadline and wasn't allowed to play or something?

Does he still get his $500?

The McAmmond situation was a waiver rule issue. Teams weren't allowed to re-acquire players dealt prior to the waiver draft within the same season. That rule was wiped out when the waiver draft itself was eliminated in the 2005 CBA.

We are very excited to launch this contest and expect a great turnout for this ultimate fan experience,” said Florida Panthers Executive Chairman Peter Luukko. “This contest provides our hockey community with the opportunity to earn a chance to skate with the Panthers and serve as the team’s back-up practice goalie for a day.”
The “Goal of a Lifetime” contest is open to all men and women goaltenders (must be 18-years-old or older). All goaltenders are asked to submit their playing resume to FloridaPanthers.com/backupgoalie. After reviewing the resumes, a select group of goaltenders will participate in an on-ice try-out that will take place on Monday, March 16, at 4 p.m. at BB&T Center. Panthers Goaltending Coach Robb Tallas and select Panthers Alumni will oversee the try-outs.

too bad I'm not 18 anymore. Haha. What I wouldn't do to at least be a back up for any NHL team.

I don't remember the details, but I believe the Oilers brought their equipment guy in to play net due to an injury and sickness during warmup, years and years ago.
I probably got all of that wrong, but I know it happened.

Wait, they put Joey Moss in net? Are you for real? Is there a link?

I couldn't find one...and I am not positive I got the team or position correct. But yah, pregame the team had to scramble and signed either someone in the crowd or a salary position on the team. Shoot, now I am thinking it was also a commentator who was put in backup.
I have watched hockey since about 79, so I forget way more than I know.

Honestly, this is genious. Take the most media they've had in a very long time, and turn it into a nonchalant goalie contest for the fans. Sportsnet covered it and I'm sure others back as well, just great for the Panthers.

Ha Ha the Fan goaltender contest fueling a dream. Some Fla fan hoping to get a chance like Scot Halpin! Who is Scot Halpin, you ask? He was a shmoe at a Who concert, that got called out of the audience to sit in for an incapacitated Keith Moon, so the band could finish their set! http://ultimateclassicrock.com/a-fan...-with-the-who/
