In 1987-88: Nieuwendyk, 21, scored 51 g. #Flames team scored 397 g.
In first two years: Monahan, 20, has scored 44 g. Team has scored 375 g.

Oh boy.

I don't get the point of his comparison... Is he saying Monahan sucks because he took 2 years to get 44 goals, while Nieuwy scored 51 in 1 season?

Don't get it either. What's the comparison there? Is that 1 Nieuwendyk season vs almost 2 Monahan seasons in a completely different era? Doesn't really say much at all.

I took it as a direct comparison. And that Monahan is probably the best drafted center since Niewy to produce goals like that

No, I think he is impressed, because when Niewy hit 50, the team was scoring almost twice as many goals per season.

Ramo snags the puck like a boss then lays into Simmonds. Boys are fired up early.

The point, I think, Haynes was making is that Monahan's production as a % of team production is tracking Nieuwendyk - not a bad comparison.

Maybe it shows that, contextually, Monahan rivals Newy? That 80s team scored a ton. This team scores a fair bit, and it seems like the percentage of contribution is similar between Monnie and Newy.

ETA: beaten by Gaud.

Ohhh wait a minute. The 375 team goals is over 2 seasons. Right, now I get it.

That's pretty wild!

He is comparing the two centres, but using the amount of goals scored by the teams during that time as a way to compare their contributions to the team; seemingly trying to bridge eras.

Joe scored 51 of the Flames 395 goals that year.
Mony scored 44 of the Flames goals in 2 years and the Flames have only scored 375 goals in that span.

Perhaps when the Flames have scored 395, Mony will have more than 51?

Weird comparison but interesting none the less.
