Probably not the best thing to guess about, a great guy lost his life and he had 200-300 jumps under his belt. I get you're just filling in the only other option with what the OP said.

Personally I believe equipment error was to blame in that case in Innisfail being it was the first time that person was wearing a new wing suit, I saw Nixon pointed out conscious decision to pull his chute.

Pay attention to how loose his chest strap is upon exiting the aircraft (0:44) and then again as the instructor pulls his chute (1:35). His harness almost slips right off his shoulder as the chute is deployed and the instructor releases him. Probably loosened even more as he was seizing.

The whole video is scary as hell.. student is extremely lucky for a number of reasons.
